The Lives of the Artists Volume 1, by Giorgio Vasari

In his Lives of the Artists of the Italian Renaissance, Vasari demonstrated a literary talent that outshone even his outstanding abilities as a painter and architect. Through character sketches and anecdotes he depicts Piero di Cosimo shut away in his derelict house, living only to paint; Giulio Romano's startling painting of Jove striking down the giants; and his friend Francesco Salviati, whose biography also tells us much about Vasari's own early career. Vasari's original and soaring vision plus his acute aesthetic judgements have made him one of the most influential art historians of all time.

Extremely readable, contemporary account of his peers
By John L Haynes
Vasari was a life-long correspondent of Michaelangelo, a contemporary of Leonardo, etc., so the accounts are written about his friends and comnpetitors, not 100+ years later, thru the prism of time. Yet this translation is in readable, 20th Century English.
The chapters on Brunelleschi, Donato, etc. are lively, entertaining as well as instructive. MUST reading for anyone going to Italy, or to see works of the Florentine artists.
(N.B. I am an engineer who never had a fine arts class, ever!)

Giorgio Vasari - Lives of the Artists Volume One
By Ayla M. Amon
A good introduction to Medieval, Renaissance, and Mannerist artists written by someone who lived around their time and had actual contact with some of the artists, as well as personal painting experience. He is, however, colored by his personal relationships with the artists, hyperbolic, and constrained by the Zeitgeist of the era. In exploring the relationships of artist and patron he is able to shed light on their social situation and the constant struggle of the elevation of the art of painting among the liberal arts. In English, some of the grandeur of his writing is lost, and it lacks the poetic ease of the Italian original. If you want a fuller version, I suggest (especially for bilingual speakers) a translation with the Italian original on the other side of the page.

Lives of the Artists by Vasari
By S. Scott
Printed originally in Italian in the mid-sixteenth century, this book is considered not only the first history of art but also the first to put into words the process of growth and rebirth that characterized the Renaissance. Vasari writes about artists who were, for the most part, his contemporaries. He knew of their work and their lives, if not first-hand then by reputation or by association. The little stories he weaves into their lives give insight into each artist's personality. Though Vasari does try to make them all fit the mold of the Renaissance man, he shows us the chinks in the facade.

About the Author
From as far back as she can remember Michelle Conder dreamed of being a writer. She penned the first chapter of a romance novel just out of high school, but it took much study, many (varied) jobs, one ultra-understanding husband and three gorgeous children before she finally sat down to turn that dream into a reality.

Ava glanced out of the car window at the sparkling summer sunshine bouncing off the exquisite French countryside and wished herself a thousand miles away. Maybe a million. That would land her on another planet where no one knew her name. Where no one knew the man her father had expected her to marry was about to marry another woman, and felt sorry for her in the process.

'It's time you stopped messing around in Paris, my girl, and came home to Anders.'

That particularly supportive comment had come only this morning, making her blood boil. His condescending words filled her head, drowning out the singer on the car radio who was warbling about wanting to go home. Home was the last place Ava wanted to go.

Not that her father's anger was entirely unexpected. Of course he was disappointed that the man she had been pledged to marry since she was a child had fallen in love with someone else. The way he'd spoken to her—A woman your age doesn't have time to waste!'—as if turning thirty in a year meant that she was over the hill—made it seem as if it was her fault.

But Ava wanted to fall in love! She wanted to get married! She just hadn't wanted to marry Gilles—a childhood friend who was more like a brother to her than her own—and he hadn't wanted to marry her. The problem was they had played along with their fathers' archaic pledge for a little too long, sometimes using each other for a fill-in date when the need arose.

Oh, how her father would love to hear that… Somehow, after her mother's death fifteen years ago, her relationship with him had disintegrated to the point where they barely spoke, let alone saw each other. Of course if she had been born a boy things would have been different.

Very different.

She would have had different choices. She would have been Crown Prince, for one—and, while she had no wish at all to rule their small European nation, she would at least have had her father's respect. His affection. Something.

Ava gripped the steering wheel of her hatchback more tightly as she turned onto the narrow country lane that ran alongside Chateau Verne, Gilles's fifteenth-century estate.

For eight years she had lived a happy, relatively low-key existence in Paris; finishing university and building her business, stepping in at royal functions when her brother Frederic had been absent. Now that Gilles, Marquis de Bassonne, was set to marry a friend of hers, she had a bad feeling that was all about to change.

Ava crinkled her nose at her uncharacteristically gloomy mood. Gilles and Anne had fallen in love at first sight two months ago and were happier than she'd ever seen either one of them before. They completed each other in a way that would inspire songwriters and she wasn't jealous.

Not at all.

Her life was rolling along just fine. Her art gallery, Gallery Nouveau, had just been reviewed in a prestigious art magazine and she was busier than ever. It was true that her love-life was a little on the nonexistent side, but her break-up three years ago with Colyn—the man she had believed she would eventually marry—had left her emotionally drained and a little wary.

At nearly twenty years her senior he had seemed to her to be the epitome of bourgeois intellectualism: a man who didn't care about her heritage and loved her for herself. It had taken a couple of years to figure out that his subtle criticisms of her status and his desire to 'teach' her all that he knew made him as egotistical and controlling as her father.

And she really wished he hadn't popped into her mind, because now she felt truly terrible.

The only other times she'd felt this miserable had been during gorgeous evenings wandering by herself along the Seine, when she was unable to avoid watching couples so helplessly in love with each other they couldn't walk two paces without stopping to steal another kiss.

She had never felt that. Not once.

She frowned, wondering if she ever would.

After Colyn she had been determined only to date nice men with solid family values. Men who were in touch with their feelings. But they hadn't inspired much more than friendship in her. Thankfully her business kept her too busy to dwell on what she lacked, and if she was getting older…

Pah!

Stamping on even more moodaltering thoughts, she adjusted the volume dial on the radio and wasn't at all prepared when she put her foot on the brake to slow down for a bend in the road and nothing happened. Imagining that she had put her foot on the accelerator instead, she'd moved to correct the oversight when the car hit a patch of gravel and started to slide.

Panicking, she yanked on the steering wheel to keep the car straight, but the car had gathered momentum and in the blink of an eye it fishtailed and rammed into some sort of small tree.

Groaning, Ava clasped her head where it had bounced off the steering wheel.

For a moment she just sat there. Then she realised the engine was roaring, took her foot from the accelerator and switched the car off. Her ears rang loudly in the sudden silence and then she caught the sound of one of her tyres spinning in midair. Glancing out through the windscreen, she realised her car was wedged on top of a clump of rocks and heather plants in full bloom.

Talk about a lapse in concentration!

She blew out a breath and gingerly moved her limbs one at a time. Thankfully the car had been going too slowly for her to have been seriously hurt. A good thing—except she could picture her father shaking his head at her. He was always telling her to use a driver on official engagements, but of course she didn't listen. Arguing with him had become something of a blood sport. A blood sport he was so much better at than her. It was one of the main reasons she'd snuck off to study Fine Arts at the Sorbonne. If she had stayed in Anders it would have been impossible to keep the promise she had made to her dying mother to try and get along with her father.

His earlier edict replayed again in her head. She couldn't return to Anders. What would she do there? Sit around and play parlour games all day while she waited for him to line up another convenient husband? The thought made her shiver.

Determined to stop thinking about her father, Ava carefully opened the car door and stepped out into the long grass. The spiky heels of her ankle boots immediately sank into the soft earth.

Great. As a gallery owner it was imperative that she always look impeccable and there was no way she could afford to ruin her prized Prada boots. Since she'd decided a long time ago not to take any of her father's money she didn't have any spare cash lying around to replace them. Another decision that had displeased him.

She stood precariously on the balls of her feet and leaned in to retrieve her handbag. Her phone had fallen out and when she picked it up she saw the screen was smashed. Unable to remember Gilles's mobile number, she tossed it back in the car in frustration. She could always call emergency services, but then her little accident would be all over the news in a heartbeat—and the thought of any more attention this week for 'the poor jilted Princess' made her teeth gnash together. Which didn't help her sore head. No. She'd simply have to walk.

But standing on the grassy verge with her hands on her hips, she realised just how far it was to the main gates. Her beloved boots would be destroyed. Not to mention how hot and sweaty she would be by the time she got there. This was not the graceful and dignified entrance she had planned to make. And if one of those media vans she had seen loitering a few miles back saw her.

Wondering just what to do next, she had a sudden brainwave. A sudden and slightly crazy brainwave. Fortuitously—if she could describe running her little car into a ditch in such terms—she'd crashed right near a section of the outer wall that she had played on with her brother Frederic and her cousin Baden and Gilles during family visits to the chateau in her childhood. Scaling the wall as revolutionary spies had been their secret game, and they'd even scraped out footholds to aid their escape from imaginary enemies.

Ava felt a grin creep across her face for the first time that day. She had to concede it was a tad desperate, but with Gilles's wedding only hours away that was exactly what she was. And, anyway, she had always loved to climb as a kid; surely it would be even easier as an adult?

'There's a woman stuck on the south wall, boss. What do you want us to do with her?'

Wolfe pulled up in the middle of an arched hallway in Chateau Verne and pressed his phone a little tighter to his ear. 'On the wall?'

'The very top,' repeated Eric, one of the more junior members of Wolfe's security team.

Wolfe tensed. Perfect. Most likely another interfering journalist, trying to get the scoop on his friend's extravagant wedding to the daughter of a controversial American politician. They hadn't let up all day, circling the chateau like starving buzzards. But none had been brazen enough to go over the wall yet. Of course he'd been prepared for the possibility—the reason they now had this little intruder in hand.

'Name?'

'Says she's Ava de Veers, Princess of Anders.'

A princess climbing over a forty-foot brick wall? Wolfe didn't think so. 'ID?'

'No ID in her handbag. Says she had a car accident and it must have fallen out.'

Clever.

'Camera?'

'Check.'

Wolfe considered his options. Even from inside the thick walls of the chateau he could hear the irritating whine of distant media choppers as they hovered just outside the established no-fly zone. With the wedding still three hours away he'd better extend the security perimeters before there were any more breaches.

'Want me to take her back to base, boss?'

'No.' Wolfe shot his hand through his hair. He'd rather turf her back over the wall than give her even more access to the property by taking her to the outer cottage his men were temporarily using. And he would—after he had established her identity and satisfied himself that she wasn't a real threat. 'Leave her where she's perched.' He was about to ring off when he had another thought. 'And, Eric, keep your gun on her until I get there.' That would teach her for entering a private function without an invitation.

'Ah…you mean keep her on the wall?'

When Eric hesitated Wolfe knew right then that the woman was attractive.

'Yes, that's exactly what I mean.' For all he knew she could be a political nutcase instead of an overzealous journo. 'And don't engage in any conversation with her until I get there.'

Wolfe trusted his men implicitly, but the last thing he needed was some smoking Mata Hari doing a number on their head.

'Yes, sir.'

Wolfe pocketed his phone. This would mean he wouldn't be able to start the pre-wedding game of polo Gilles had organised. Annoying, but it couldn't be helped. He'd offered to run security for Gilles's wedding because it was what he did, and the job always came first.

Once outside, Wolfe found Gilles and his merry band already waiting for him at the stables, the horses groomed and saddled and raring to go. Wolfe ran his gaze over the roguish white Arabian that Gilles had promised him. He'd missed his daily gym workout this morning and had been looking forward to putting the stallion through his paces.

Hell, he still could. Taking the reins from the handler, he swung easily onto the giant of a horse. The stallion shifted restlessly beneath his weight and Wolfe automatically reached forward to pat his neck, breathing in the strong scent of horse and leather. 'What's his name?'

'Achilles.'

His mouth quirked and Gilles shrugged. 'Apollo was taken and he's a bloody contrary animal. You should enjoy each other.'

Wolfe laughed at his aristocratic friend. Years ago they had forged an unbreakable bond when they had trained together for selection on an elite military task force. They'd been there for each other during the tough times and celebrated during the good. Inevitably Gilles had started sprouting reams of poetry and Greek myths to stay awake when they'd spent long hours waiting for something to happen. By contrast Wolfe, a rugged Australian country boy, had used a more simple method. Sheer grit and stubborn determination. A trait that had served him well when he had swapped special ops for software development and created what was currently the most sophisticated computer spyware on the planet.

Wolfe Inc had been forged around that venture, and when his younger brother had joined him they'd expanded into every aspect of the security business. But where his brother thrived on the corporate life Wolfe preferred the freedom of being able to mix things up a little. He even kept his hand in on some of the more hairy covert ops some governments called consultants in to take care of. He had to get his adrenaline high from something other than his beloved Honda CBR.

'Always the dreamer, Monsieur le Marquis,' he drawled.

'Just a man who knows how to have balance in his life, Ice,' Gilles countered good-naturedly, calling Wolfe by his old military nickname. He swung onto the back of a regal-looking bay. 'You should try it some time, my friend.'

'I've got plenty of balance in my life,' Wolfe grunted, thinking about the Viennese blonde he'd been glad to see the back of a month ago. 'No need to worry your pretty head on that score.'

Achilles snorted and tossed his nose in challenge as Wolfe took up the reins.

'I won't be joining you just yet. I need to check on an issue that's come up.' He kept his tone deliberately bland so as not to alarm his friend, who should be concentrating on why he was signing his life away to a woman in matrimony rather than why a woman was currently sitting on one of his outer walls. 'Achilles and I will join you in a few.'

The horse pulled against the bit and Wolfe smiled. There was nothing quite like using all his skills to master a difficult animal, and he wondered if Gilles would consider selling him. He already liked the unmanageable beast.

Ava had to attend the wedding of her ex-fiancee. It wasn't a hardship - she and Gilles had been friends all their lives and they'd never really had a relationship. It was just assumed they'd marry someday, but he found someone to love - and that meant Ava had to pretend she was putting on a brave face, even if she was secretly thrilled for her old friend. If she had to be completely truthful, she was also a little jealous that he'd found the thing she never had. True love.

Wolfe and Gilles were also old friends, but he and Princess Ava de Veers had never met. He's tasked to head up security at his pal's wedding, so when he gets a call about the woman scaling the wall to get onto the property he has to investigate. Paparazzi have been circling, and it was just a matter of time before they tried something desperate. Turns out that Humpty-Dumpty-ess was who she claimed to be. But apparently, being a princess didn't translate into having a meek and subservient personality.

Wolfe was heavy-handed and infuriating, and he thought she was too flippant and sassy for her own good. So when Gilles asks him innocently to keep an eye on her neither of them want to get near each other. But when the groom learns about their encounter at the edges of his property, he figures they'll work it out on their own.

Of course, when the magnets (Ava and Wolfe) are flipped, they can't seem to stay apart - and when a tragic event points back to danger headed Ava's way, Wolfe is assigned to be her bodyguard by the King himself. At least he can take solace in the fact that he doesn't sleep with his clients. What he doesn't take into account is that Ava knows her father is actually his client, and she can't seem to keep any distance between them either.

The steam factor in this story is quite high, and I loved the main characters. Their banter was off the charts, and I could almost feel the sandpaper-like sparks flying whenever they fought. Has everything a HQ Presents should have - and more. Highly recommended!

Her bodyguard
By Da_Cats_meow
This is a really sexy contemporary romance, based around a princess falling in love with her bodyguard. There was witty banter, an interesting mystery and a love that neither main character wanted to acknowledge. Overall it made for an interesting book and held my attention throughout the pages.

I liked it and will be looking for more of this authors books.

Duty At What Cost is a good book. Ava is a really level headed, not into living the princess lifestyle lady. While Wolfe is a love jaded millionaire/bodyguard. Together they but heads and have great chemistry, and find what they are really looking for in life.

Implementing Safety Management Systems in Aviation (Ashgate Studies in Human Factors for Flight Operations), by Alan J. Stolzer, Carl D. H

The International Civil Aviation Organization has mandated that all of its member states implement Safety Management Systems (SMS) in their aviation industries. Responding to that call, many countries are now in various stages of SMS development, implementation, and rulemaking. In their first book, Safety Management Systems in Aviation, Stolzer, Halford, and Goglia provided a strong theoretical framework for SMS, along with a brief discourse on SMS implementation. This follow-up book provides a very brief overview of SMS and offers significant guidance and best practices on implementing SMS programs. Very specific guidance is provided by industry experts from government, industry, academia, and consulting, who share their invaluable insights from first-hand experience of all aspects of effective SMS programs. The contributing authors come from all facets of aviation, including regulation and oversight, airline, general aviation, military, airport, maintenance, and industrial safety. Chapters address important topics such as how to develop a system description and perform task analyses, perspectives on data sharing, strategies for gaining management support, establishing a safety culture, approaches to auditing, integrating emergency planning and SMS, and more. Also included is a fictional narrative/story that can be used as a case study on SMS implementation. Implementing Safety Management Systems in Aviation is written for safety professionals and students alike.

Theory not practice
By Andy Evans
Perhaps this should be titled `The Theory of Implementing SMS in Aviation'. While the 14 chapters generally do cover their allocated areas competently with relatively original material, they are however primarily focused on theory not practice, limiting the value to a reader who has the real world challenge of establishing or developing an SMS. The greatest exception is Chapter 10 on safety reporting by Nick Seemel, a Canadian pilot, who shares his personal experience and enthusiasm. Only a couple of other chapters attempt to leverage any case studies, but in most cases the authors do not make use of the first hand experience they no doubt have. Despite having three editors, the chapters flow unevenly with frequent overlaps that readers new to the subject will find frustrating. For example the pillar of safety promotion has its own chapter but one of just 8 pages, the auditing chapter focuses on IOSA/IS-BAO etc rather than actual internal auditing and a chapter on information-sharing focuses on industry-wide schemes. Chapter 6, by Bill Yentis on `SMS implementation' (perhaps un-surprisingly) is probably the most comprehensive and balanced overview, though still focusing mostly on theoretical models. This is also one of the few chapters to acknowledge developments outside of the US. The book also lacks a solid concluding chapter, simply stopping at a short chapter on SMS aviation maintenance. As in the editor's previous collaboration, the book starts with a well written fictional safety story. This would have benefited from subsequent comment. Of the 17 authors, 16 are from the US. Five are consultants, five are researchers, three are from FAA/TSI and four work for air operators.

Introduction

These days, we seem to have a better understanding of how to control disease and the aging process. We know that it matters what we put
into our bodies—we recognize the benefits that can be achieved by eating well, how it affects our energy levels, and how we feel about ourselves. Eating healthily gives us a positive outlook on life in general.

We also often hear that cooking can kill healthy enzymes and damage nutrients found in foods, and so we’re looking for quick and easy ways to eat raw food.

What a great way to eat all those raw fruits and vegetables in your kitchen: take a handful of spinach, add an apple or two, throw them into your blender or juicer, and away you go—a fun-packed, nutrient-rich green drink! You would have to eat a lot of spinach in a salad to get the same amount of nutrients that you can by juicing.

This book will offer you helpful hints and fantastic recipe ideas to set you up on green drinks for life. Whether you want to lose weight, fight fatigue, combat disease, or just be healthier, adding green drinks into your diet
will slowly transform your health for
the better.

Top six green smoothie benefits

Smoothies can:
1. Cleanse and detox your body, as well as balance acid and alkaline levels, helping to prevent disease and heal existing health problems.
2. Help you to replace your caffeine fix with a natural energy boost.
3. Benefit kids who perhaps are not
that keen on vegetables—you can hide the vegetables in with their favorite fruits.
4. Give you energy from the anti-oxidants and phytochemicals present.
5. Provide for a healthy snack or a meal replacement.
6. Help purify your blood because they are packed full of vitamins, enzymes, and chlorophyll.

A smoothie or a juice?
Smoothies and juices are both very good for you, and which you choose to drink is a matter of personal pref-erence. Both are highly nutritious and use raw ingredients, but to make a smoothie, you use a blender, and to make a juice, you use a juicer (see page 9 for advice on equipment).

If you put some fruit and vegetables in your juicer, a great drink full of vitamins and minerals will pour out—one that you can drink quickly and will no doubt give you an energy boost, because all the nutrients will enter your bloodstream in a matter
of minutes. Juicing is the quickest way of getting healthy greens into your body. The pulp that is left in the juicer (which it’s best to empty and clean out right away) is where the fiber is. Fiber slows down the absorption of nutrients, which then release slowly into your system.

When you make smoothies, this pulp is whizzed in a blender and broken down into a thick liquid. You can adjust the consistency to your liking by adding water to make it more digestible. Smoothies contain fiber which is important to help the body eliminate waste, as it cleans your digestive tract and colon. It’s recommended that you sip smoothies; drinking them too fast can cause bloating.

Having just one juice and one smoothie a day can yield incredible results for your body—just try it!

Green ingredients
When you begin mixing fruits and vegetables, it can be hard to get used to the “green taste.” There is nothing wrong with this—you will find that you may need to experiment at the beginning as you might crave more fruit (that is, more sweetness). Most of the recipes in this book are roughly 60 percent vegetable to 40 percent fruit, and sometimes contain even less fruit.

Do remember to rotate the greens that you use in your smoothies and juices, as variety is key to supplying all those different nutrients to your body. It also keeps your taste buds interested!

Awesome, affordable options!
By Nicole Roberts
So, with a market so flooded with paleo-inspired, lo-carb, pro-green food options, why this book? Green smoothies and juices have countless benefits such as giving you a boost in energy, infusing your body with nutrients, improving digestion, purifying your blood, helping you lose weight… the list goes on and on!

This book is beautifully designed, comprehensive and contains 66 easy-to-make, affordable smoothie, juice blends, and tonics. The best part about this book is that it is easy to follow and starts off with teaching you the benefits of green smoothies, what equipment to use and even illustrates each super green and their benefits.

You’ll also find a 7 day detox plan which is easy to follow and includes a before, during and after guide. Each day focuses on a single make-ahead smoothie recipes and is broken up into breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Detoxes are something we should do every 6 months to give our system a good clean out.

This book focuses on the idea that toxins accumulate over long periods of time in our digestive problems, and as a result fatigue and sickness can become constants in our lives, but with the use of daily juicing we can personally strive to eliminate the adverse reactions to said toxins in a safe, natural, affordable way.

Moreover, the pages are beautifully illustrated so you know exactly what ingredients are required and what the end product looks like, a plus in my book!

If you love green smoothies, juices and tonics I highly recommend purchasing this book. Please note, I received this book as a review copy from blogging for books, but all opinions are my own, thank you.

Fabulous Book!
By Jacqui Corn-Uys
Just looking at the cover is enough to start the juices in the mouth flowing!

When you feel you've lost the inspiration to use your juicer, a fabulous book like this comes out and you are hooked again. From juices to smoothies to shots and milks, there are a myriad of recipes for you to try. The book starts with an intro on the benefits and different types of drinks as well as covering the equipment needed for each recipe. The ingredients are broken down for you and accompanied by beautiful glossy photos so that you can be sure you are using the correct ingredients. I loved the incorporation of a picture of the final product so that you know whether or not the mixture is actually meant to be the colour that it is! Helpful guidelines like whether the drink is detoxifying or immunising are included with each recipe. The colour palette throughout the book is gorgeous and the variety of recipes amazing. Highly recommended.

Why Peace, by Marc Guttman

"Who doesn't want peace?" you might ask yourself. But look around you: War and human rights violations are everywhere. Fear is a dominant cultural bond. Meanwhile, so many of us consent to this aggression - when it is done by the government we think represents us.

Why Peace is about our aspirations to our own progression, to where peaceful and voluntary societal systems and associations replace the machinery of aggression and coercion. Only by interacting peacefully can we achieve a more harmonious, prosperous, healthy, fair and tolerant society.

This book is an exploration of aggression, and of the evolutionary (and revolutionary) process to peace. Through the insights of men and women, from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives, Why Peace presents stories of wars, invasions, and political repressions - down to the most basic levels of authoritarianism. These individuals share mind-opening and inspiring personal experiences with state violence: North Korean gulag prisoners, exiled journalists, soldiers at war (and some who refused to go back), Colombian campesinos displaced by drug war fumigations, people violently displaced by their government for private corporate interests in the Amazon, families run over by war, victims of cluster bombs in Southeast Asia, Guantánamo prisoners, a Cuban student denied the rights to speak and organize, and much more.

Also in this collaboration are military officers, former state officials, political prisoners, activists, economists, aid workers, and others. Each has contributed to this work to help demonstrate the philosophy, morality, and universal benefits of non-aggression and protecting human rights. Seventy-eight people, from thirty-four countries on five continents, share their stories here. Find out why they all came to a similar conclusion: peace is best for all and its time has come.

Why Peace -- A look at war from many perspetives
By Eva F. Kosinski
If you find yourself asking "how did we get into so many wars?" this is the place to look for answers. You may not agree with every perspective, but I'm pretty sure they're all here.

It's a view-from-every perspective of what war is, what it's not, why people want it, why it never seems to do what we thought it would do, and it's probably got enough information, complete with bibliographies and citations, to qualify as a for-credit class.

there are so many viewpoints, from folks who were working in countries that were at war (for NGOs, for example), to those who emigrated to the US to get away from repressive regimes in North Korea and Cuba, to those who had to try to win "minds and hearts" in Afghanistan. A South African talks about living under apartheid. There are many articles by ex-military; some had very senior positions. And there are articles trying to get at the heart of the sinister military-industrial-congressional connection that pushes constantly at our government to keep the arms sales going.

We've been taught a lot of things about war. Some are spin, some are jingoistic efforts to substitute patriotism for thinking, some are catchphrases, "war is hell," "the first casualty of war is the truth," etc., but frankly, I was somewhat unprepared for this book.

I now have a stack of papers sitting by the book, full of quotations from its various authors, because every new section contains some serious, thought-provoking questions, and sometimes news that we've never heard before.

We remember Vietnam, but only a few are aware of what happened in the Plain of Jars, a bombing by the US kept secret from the public for over 5 years and continued for 9.

It is a disturbing book. Some of the experiences related by veterans are more chilling than a Stephen King book, and even more so because they happened in real life. Atrocities committed under orders could not be integrated into world-views when veterans returned.

...friends began turning to alcohol and prescription drugs to escape their inner turmoil. False promises of a nation supporting its troops also became exposed, as these same friends were turned away from mental health facilities, cracked down on for their drunken antics, and demeaned through articles about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, posted on walls with the word "P * * * y" [partial expletive deleted -gw] etched over them.

I'm still halfway through, but didn't want to wait to let you know that I believe this is a book every single American should read, whether they believe that war is a good idea or not.

There is no one author connecting the dots, but as the reader goes from section to section, there emerges a clear understanding of how the system "works" (or doesn't), to keep us in a more or less constant state of warfare for the last 100 years.

Some authors tell their own personal stories of what they've gone through, whether as combatants, or civilians on the ground trying to stay alive, or as victims of repressive regimes trying to solve their countries' ills without resort to war.

"My relatives were among the millions of Iraqis who had no say in their government's actions, but who would now pay dearly at the hands of the most powerful military in the world"

from Sarajevo, Bosnia, former site of the Olympics:

"everyone was on a crash course to learn 19th century skills such as chopping wood and bathing in a bucket...candles ran out quickly so people made do with lamps made from jar lids with old shoelaces as wicks, dipped in gasoline, stale oil or rancid lard . . . Just about all the glass in the city had shattered by the end of 1992, and everyone's windows were covered with UN-supplied plastic foil."

When I first started this book, I felt it was a bit tough to get through: so many different views from different writers from different countries, so many details, so many weird interconnections between industry and government -- plus too many things I didn't actually WANT to know. But as I read it, suddenly all of my other projects and chores kind of went by the wayside. I was, as my husband says "sucked in" looking for even more details and stories from folks who had to live through war. This is a really important book for people to read and process, because not only does it speak to who we are as a people and how our actions are seen by others, but what we could turn into if we aren't paying attention. I believe this is a book every single American should read, whether they believe that war is a good idea or not.

You may never think about war the same again
By Lawrence W. Reed
This is a great anthology of essays by some of the most thoughtful lovers of peace, liberty and humanity in recent times. You don't have to be a pacifist to appreciate its many insights but if you've got a hair trigger temperament, this is your antidote. -- Lawrence W. Reed, President, Foundation for Economic Education.

Powerful and Chilling
By prayn4peace
Powerful and chilling; thanks so much, Marc, for giving us such an important book. Why Peace offers a compilation of essays by those who've experienced and witnessed the violence of war and the suffering of oppression firsthand, whether as journalists, prisoners, activists, human rights workers, soldiers. From Sarajevo to the Sudan, from Iraq to North Korea, and Guantanamo to Vietnam, come stories so extraordinary that I often found them hard to read, but I couldn't put it down. I know I'll never forget the tiny children who died of fear, clinging to one another as bombs fell around their home.

But there is also an overlying hope in Why Peace, a hope that is borne in the compassion and hearts of those working for justice, and those simply living (surviving) in horrendous situations but retaining their humanity, continuing to reach beyond their own suffering to help others. Why Peace offers a glimpse into the policies and practices that foster violence and shape our acceptance of what, with a true awareness, we could only condemn. A timely book, as we once again hear the distant drumming of the warmongers. This book can only help but bring us closer to answering the title's question, an answer that simply must be - to preserve humanity.

Thank you, Marc, for this book and for all you do to bringing us closer to Peace.

Essential reading for Anglicans and students of early church history
By Fr. Charles Erlandson
Gray's The Origin and Early History of Christianity in Britain is an important and fascinating work that deserves a wider readership. It is essential reading for anyone interested in Anglicanism, the English Church, or early Church history.

It's not surprising that a work of such remarkable and essential research was done by a 19th Century Englishman, for 19th Century English scholarship is unmatched ("how are the mighty fallen"!) Thankfully, Artisan Publishers has reprinted the work.

Gray's work is divided into 4 parts:
I. The Origin and Early History of Christianity in Britain
II. The Church in Britain from the Close of the First Century to the Establishment of the Heptarchy
III. The Missionary Character and Work of the Early British Church
IV. The Mission of Augustine

Of these, the first section is by far the most important and riveting, and so I'll spend most of the rest of my review on this section. In Section I, Gray asserts the following:
1. that Joseph of Arimathea came to Britain in A.D. 38
2. that Britain was the first nation to proclaim Christianity as its religion
3. that the Aristobulus mentioned in the book of Romans traveled to Britain and
was made the first bishop of Britain
4. that St. Paul himself traveled to Britain

It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of these well-substantiated claims. If they are, true, then they refute what was once the prevailing wisdom that the Church of England was established in A.D. 597 by the Roman Catholic Church's commissioning of St. Augustine to establish a mission in Britain. In other words, the Church of England had a national, ecclesiastical identity for almost 6 centuries before the Roman Church came to the British shores.

Furthermore, this evidence underscores the importance of remembering that the Church of England was most certainly not created by Henry VIII!

In considering Gray's claims, it's important to begin with his methodology. Gray, fortunately, cites a wide variety of sources to back up his astonishing claims. While some of these sources contain legendary material, the number and antiquity of sources Gray cites converge to paint a picture that is most probably an accurate one.

The evidence at hand will not persuade everyone who is looking for overwhelming evidence for Gray's claims. But given the general availability of evidence for the ancient world of 2000 years ago and the fragility of manuscript evidence, for example, Gray's claims are as solidly established as much of what we think we know about ancient history. As Gray states, "Had any doubt existed, on this point of priority [of the English Church], it certainly would have been contested by some of the other Churches . . ." (p. 9). Again, "No author, indeed, who has taken pains to examine its evidence rejects its main facts" (p. 10).

For the curious, here are some of the sources Gray cites for his claims that Joseph of Arimathea came to Britain in A.D. 38 and that Britain was the first nation that proclaimed Christianity as its religion:
1. Polydore Vergil (Roman Catholic contemporary of Henry VIII)
2. Cardinal Pole (1555)
3. The Councils of Pisa (1417), Constance (1419), and Sena.
4. Sabellius
5. Gildas (520-560)
6. Maeglygwyn of Llandaff (450)
7. Vellum Cottonian manuscript (also quoted by Archbishop Usher in the 17th century)
8. The Vatican Manuscript
9. The Chronicon of Pseudo-Dexter
10. The Fragmenta of Haleca, Archbishop of Saragossa
11. Archbishop Parker (in a letter to John Calvin!)

Gray compiles an equally impressive array of sources to suggest that St. Paul traveled to Britain.

As you can see by the sources I listed above, some of the dates of the sources are missing. That's because Gray doesn't provide them. This is one of the shortcomings of Gray's work.

Gray's work is an essential starting point for understanding early church history, particularly that of the Church of England and Anglicanism. However, his work needs to be updated not only to provide missing pieces of information but also to bring it into line with the past century of scholarship. Any takers?

As Anglicanism tries desperately to find its way forward, it should consider the evidence in Gray's work and remember that its roots go back to the 1st century in the Church of England, and that Anglicanism did not begin or in the 16th century of Henry VIII and Archbishop Thomas Cranmer.

Though dated, still an excellent review...
By Iona Sun
...for those new to the subject and who think Augustine (not that Augustine, the other Augustine) was the first to bring Christianity to Britain. Gray suggests evidence that Christianity arrived in Britain even before the Roman Empire began it's expansion onto the island. Surprising and well written and worth pursuing.

Grateful for this effort

It is nice to learn more about what happened before St. Augustine was came from Rome to Brittain at the close of the 5th century. I know history is written by the victors, and no one more than Rome believed when you meant to destroy a foe, it included their names, their books their, temples etc... To this day, many think St. Augustine introduced Christianity to Brittain; as if for 5 and a half centuries, it was without Christianity. This makes me wonder if Rome's imperial religion did the same.

Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics of Macromolecular Systems, by Michael Bachmann

The structural mechanics of proteins that fold into functional shapes, polymers that aggregate and form clusters, and organic macromolecules that bind to inorganic matter can only be understood through statistical physics and thermodynamics. This book reviews the statistical mechanics concepts and tools necessary for the study of structure formation processes in macromolecular systems that are essentially influenced by finite-size and surface effects. Readers are introduced to molecular modeling approaches, advanced Monte Carlo simulation techniques, and systematic statistical analyses of numerical data. Applications to folding, aggregation, and substrate adsorption processes of polymers and proteins are discussed in great detail. Particular emphasis is placed on the reduction of complexity by coarse-grained modeling, which allows for the efficient, systematic investigation of structural phases and transitions. Providing insight into modern research at this interface between physics, chemistry, biology, and nanotechnology, this book is an excellent reference for graduate students and researchers.
