Richard Barrett is founder and chairman of the Barrett Values Centre, a preeminent global consultancy in the field of values based leadership and culture transformation.
He is creator of the "seven levels of consciousness" model as well as the Culture Transformation Tools (CTT) that accompany it.
The model and CTT tools have been used in the past two decades by more than 2000 organizations in their processes of cultural transformation
(measuring and managing their values and organizational culture).
These processes have resulted in creating impeccable functioning of the organizations that have gone trough this journey and formation of highly aligned values lead systems with low levels of organizational entropy.
On the bottom line, these organizations have outperformed its competitors and shown growth and development in all the segments of functioning.
Following the success stories in the business sector, over 40 nations have begun travelling on the path of national culture transformation.
The seven levels of consciousness model is Richards shift of Maslow's hierarchy of needs model.
Here, the physiological needs of Maslow are the first level of consciousness that Barrett calls Survival.

In his latest book "The New Leadership Paradigm" (TNPL) Richard Barrett yet again is paving the way towards the development of leadership we need for the 21st century. Building further and extending on his values based "seven levels of consciousness model" which is the pillar of his work, Richard proposes methods and tools that could be used to create what he calls "full spectrum, values driven" leaders, organizations, nations and society in general.
Rotating around the seven levels model, the book has 4 main parts in which Richard guides us trough a leadership progression, from Leading Self, to Leading Others, Leading in Organizations and Leading in Society, Richard points clearly that in order to lead others we first need to master leading self. To be successful leader in society one has to master all the previous stages.
The leadership development throughout the book is practically supported with examples, exercises and coaching tools for personal and team purposes, as well as case studies of incredible culture transformation in some giant organizations such as Unilever Brazil, Volvo, NedBank to name a few.
The book serves as the core guide for the 4 separate workbooks modules (available separately) that Richard has designed for developing leadership which together with the TNLP website forms a unique leadership development system that could become a platform for growing leaders globally in a cohesive way. On more critical side, despite Richards effort to describe these complex matters in simply words, paradoxically, this is not a book that radiated leadership simplicity.
Also it is my believe that in order to create leaders who will lead in the 21st century and beyond that, we must look much deeper than well designed leadership workbooks, and the support by our coaches. Many of us in the coaching profession are struggling with deeply seated and unresolved deficiencies and superego conflicts that have not been resolved in our own long spend psychotherapy or coaching work because these methods mostly work on ego level and emotions. It is my sense, and here I take the risk of being wrong, that some of Richard's leadership development propositions are not going beyond this level despite the conceptual intention.
It is my experience that to work on the soul level, the deepest authentic self level from where universal guidance and the highest form of leadership arises, we need to be engaged and use the most advanced and recognised spiritually enlightened models in existence and promote leadership development to these highest possible levels. We need to find the enlightened spiritual teachers to help us and guide us in this process if we are committed fully to a new leadership paradigm.
Richard and many others have paved the road, now it is time to illuminate it.

Leadership development for the 21st century

In his latest book Richard Barrett has written a deeply insightful and highly relevant treatise on the fundamental importance of 'how' leaders can consciously evolve towards and beyond 'personal mastery' and then, from this place, build truly sustainable teams, organizations, communities, countries and, indeed, perhaps even a new global society in the future. Based on the underlying premise that our short term, individual needs are inseparably entangled with the longer term, wider needs of the common good, Richard gets right to the heart of the matter by drawing the attention of leaders (and coaches/consultants working with them) to the importance of making their own personal evolution 'conscious' so that they can likewise lead others by example with authenticity, passion and integrity in a 'best for the world' manner. Full of wisdom, practical advice and insight, and drawing together material from many other sources, this is without doubt one of the most comprehensive leadership development books I have ever read.
