Richard Barrett is founder and chairman of the Barrett Values Centre, a preeminent global consultancy in the field of values based leadership and culture transformation.
He is creator of the "seven levels of consciousness" model as well as the Culture Transformation Tools (CTT) that accompany it.
The model and CTT tools have been used in the past two decades by more than 2000 organizations in their processes of cultural transformation
(measuring and managing their values and organizational culture).
These processes have resulted in creating impeccable functioning of the organizations that have gone trough this journey and formation of highly aligned values lead systems with low levels of organizational entropy.
On the bottom line, these organizations have outperformed its competitors and shown growth and development in all the segments of functioning.
Following the success stories in the business sector, over 40 nations have begun travelling on the path of national culture transformation.

The seven levels of consciousness model is Richards shift of Maslow's hierarchy of needs model.
Here, the physiological needs of Maslow are the first level of consciousness that Barrett calls Survival.
Safety needs are the 2nd level called Relationships Consciousness.
Belonging needs are the 3rd level called Self-esteem Consciousness.
Know and understand needs are the 4th level called Transformation Consciousness

The term "full spectrum" functioning in the context of the seven levels of consciousness model means that an individual and/or group/organization/nation functions in a balanced way on all these levels.
The experiences have shown that individuals and systems that exhibit full spectrum consciousness tend to be functioning with greater resilience and performances that the ones who don't posses this quality.

In his latest book "The New Leadership Paradigm" (TNPL) Richard Barrett yet again is paving the way towards the development of leadership we need for the 21st century. Building further and extending on his values based "seven levels of consciousness model" which is the pillar of his work, Richard proposes methods and tools that could be used to create what he calls "full spectrum, values driven" leaders, organizations, nations and society in general.
Rotating around the seven levels model, the book has 4 main parts in which Richard guides us trough a leadership progression, from Leading Self, to Leading Others, Leading in Organizations and Leading in Society, Richard points clearly that in order to lead others we first need to master leading self. To be successful leader in society one has to master all the previous stages.

The leadership development throughout the book is practically supported with examples, exercises and coaching tools for personal and team purposes, as well as case studies of incredible culture transformation in some giant organizations such as Unilever Brazil, Volvo, NedBank to name a few.

Also it is my believe that in order to create leaders who will lead in the 21st century and beyond that, we must look much deeper than well designed leadership workbooks, and the support by our coaches. Many of us in the coaching profession are struggling with deeply seated and unresolved deficiencies and superego conflicts that have not been resolved in our own long spend psychotherapy or coaching work because these methods mostly work on ego level and emotions. It is my sense, and here I take the risk of being wrong, that some of Richard's leadership development propositions are not going beyond this level despite the conceptual intention.
It is my experience that to work on the soul level, the deepest authentic self level from where universal guidance and the highest form of leadership arises, we need to be engaged and use the most advanced and recognised spiritually enlightened models in existence and promote leadership development to these highest possible levels. We need to find the enlightened spiritual teachers to help us and guide us in this process if we are committed fully to a new leadership paradigm.

Richard and many others have paved the road, now it is time to illuminate it.

Leadership development for the 21st century

In his latest book Richard Barrett has written a deeply insightful and highly relevant treatise on the fundamental importance of 'how' leaders can consciously evolve towards and beyond 'personal mastery' and then, from this place, build truly sustainable teams, organizations, communities, countries and, indeed, perhaps even a new global society in the future. Based on the underlying premise that our short term, individual needs are inseparably entangled with the longer term, wider needs of the common good, Richard gets right to the heart of the matter by drawing the attention of leaders (and coaches/consultants working with them) to the importance of making their own personal evolution 'conscious' so that they can likewise lead others by example with authenticity, passion and integrity in a 'best for the world' manner. Full of wisdom, practical advice and insight, and drawing together material from many other sources, this is without doubt one of the most comprehensive leadership development books I have ever read.

Super disappointed. It's neither engaging nor comprehensive. There's not many Storyline books available; but I honestly think you'd be better off just reading through Articulate's tutorials, even though those are far from comprehensive as well.

In his preface to The 2012 Presidential Campaign, Robert E. Denton reflects that he has edited a book on the presidential election for every campaign dating back to 1992. Each of these elections, he argues, was both unique and very much the same as preceding contests. The chapters selected for the 2012 iteration reflect that dialectic—the contributors both explore subject matter that is particular to this cycle and place the election in appropriate historical context. Some of the chapters are exemplary, most are useful, and as a collection the edited volume holds up nicely alongside its predecessors in Denton’s series. (Presidential Studies Quarterly)

This is a comprehensive analysis of Campaign 2012, from the growing political role of candidates’ wives, to the dysfunctional presidential debates, to Romney’s rhetorically challenged response to attacks, to the increasingly sophisticated use of social media. The GOP foundered early in uncharacteristic disarray. About the Author

Wendy Oliver, EdD, is a professor of dance in the department of theater, dance, and film at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. She has degrees in English, dance, and dance education and has taught dance at the college level for over 20 years. She believes that writing has a place in every dance course and she incorporates dance criticism, dance research, and informal dance writing into her classes on a regular basis.

 

Oliver worked briefly as a dance critic, and later wrote her dissertation on the teaching of dance criticism at the college level. She has edited three books, and has published dance articles in a variety of books and journals, including the Journal of Dance in Education; Dance Research Journal; and the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. She is an editorial board member for the Journal of Dance in Education and has served on the board for the Congress on Research for Dance. She also served as director of publications for the National Dance Association and is co-coordinator of the Rhode Island Arts Proficiencies in Dance.

 

Oliver was honored in Who’s Who of American Women in 2008 to 2009 and received the National Dance Association Scholar/Artist Award in 2008. She was also listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers from 2003 to 2006 and received the Dance Educator of the Year Award in 1998 from the Rhode Island AAHPERD.

About the Author

Brian C. Nelson is Associate Professor of Educational Technology at Arizona State University. An instructional designer and learning theorist, he has published and presented extensively on the viability of educational virtual worlds for situated inquiry learning and assessment. Dr. Nelson’s recent writing addresses issues related to the design and evaluation of educational games, with a focus on theory-based design principles. He is currently a Co-Principal Investigator on the SAVE Science Virtual World project, and was the Project Designer on the River City project. He was a Co-Principal Investigator on two MacArthur Foundation Digital Learning grants and was also a Co-Principal Investigator on the SURGE project, creating video games to teach high school physics.

Benjamin E. Erlandson is Assistant Professor of Instructional Science and Technology with an emphasis in Digital Media in the School of Information, Technology, and Communication Design (ITCD) at California State University, Monterey Bay. In addition to teaching several courses in interactive media design/development and instructional design, Dr. Erlandson runs the Virtual Environments for Situated Inquiry of Complexity (VESIC) Lab, conducting various research studies investigating the usefulness of meso-immersive 2D and 3D virtual environments―much like those used for many popular computer games―for learning about complex systems.

happens to have Prof Nelson as instructor in my Virtual Worlds class. Book is very nicely written. Gives a lot of examples and real world applications. I had no idea of what I got into but after ready the book I like to learn more.

About the Author

Nicholas Monk is Research Fellow at the CAPITAL Centre, University of Warwick. He was the winner of Warwick's 2008/9 Butterworth Award for Teaching Excellence. His research interests include the relationship between pedagogy and performance; performance and performativity in native literatures; the literatures of the American Southwest, theories of modernity; and the 'postsecular' in society.
