    Excellent!
    By A. M. Steiner
The author is a Colonel of the Panzerwaffe of the modern Bundesheer, and has devoted the last twenty years to the research of the German armour development and it's operational use in the Second World War. This book serves as both history and a battlefield tour guide for the Schwere Panzerabteilungen and even an analysis of the individual fate of each Tiger in Normandy. Many of the photographs of wartime vintage are less than clear, but Oberst Schneider is quick to point that out in the preface. Very objective and well done. Some of the soldier's memories are hair-raising. Well recommended.

Excellent work on Tiger units in Normandy
    By Koba
This is a very interesting and unusual book from several perspectives. The author is an experienced German armor officer of the Bundesheer, and as such brings his professional knowledge to bear on the actions in Normandy, where he actually walked the ground himself. His knowledge is the basis for his excellent analyses of the battle of Villers Bocage, the struggle for Hill 112, Goodwood, Bluecoat, Totalize, and other engagements. (I found his criticism of Wittmann at Villers Bocage very interesting and thought-provoking; normally Wittmann is only praised for this action.) Schneider includes many pictures taken of the battlefields today, so you can see the tactical implications of the terrain, and shows on his maps precisely where he took each photo and which direction the photo is facing. The maps in this book are absolutely excellent and really support the narrative. Sometimes he includes modern photos of Normandy to compare with the historical photos, which gives the book a nice "After The Battle" effect. The author follows the combat actions of the three Tiger battalions engaged in Normandy, and assesses their overall impact on the German defensive effort.

Schneider makes a determined and largely successful effort to examine the action of the Tiger units from both sides - German and (mostly) British - using memoirs and first-person accounts where available. In my view he presents the facts quite objectively, sparing neither side from criticism where it is due.

As other reviewers have noted, some of the pictures are not of the highest quality, but modelers and Tiger enthusiasts will not be disappointed.

    I recommend this book highly!

What Tiger Tanks Accomplished in Normandy!
    By Mike O'Connor
TIGERS IN NORMANDY is the English-language translation of TIGER IM KAMPF: DIE EINSATZE IN DER NORMANDIE. In it, author Wolfgang Schneider describes the combats waged by Tiger units in the Normandy campaign and analyzes their contribution to German efforts to push the Allies back into the sea.

From June to August 1944, Army and SS units equipped with some 130 Tiger and King Tiger tanks were used to spearhead German attacks or batter Allied offensives such as Operation Goodwood, often achieving local tactical success. However, their efforts rarely produced strategic results. In large part, this was because they were deployed in penny-packets and also because, mechanically, the Tiger simply wasn't a combat-effective AFV. More Tigers were lost to mechanical breakdowns than to the hordes of Shermans and Cromwells they opposed, likewise the rocket-firing Typhoons.

After tracing the movement of the various Tiger units to the Invasion Front, Schneider describes the Tiger's Normandy record in chapters entitled 'The Mystery of Villers-Bocage,' 'The Fighting for Hill 112,' 'Operation Epsom,' 'The Hell of Operation Goodwood' and so on. Being a translation, the text is a bit stilted but not as bad as other German-to-English books I've read. Likewise, Schneider includes many first-person German and Allied accounts that bring the Normandy fighting to life.

The hundreds of photographs that illustrate the book are a mixed bag. Quality-wise, most are fair-to-good but there are a number of pix that were very poorly reproduced. PhotoShop was around in 2004 so what gives?

In any case, tank buffs will enjoy TIGERS IN NORMANDY. It's an even-handed, informative and well-illustrated chronicle of the Tiger's combat record in Normandy. Recommended.
