I have referred to this book many times. It provides practical information which I have learned from and have shared with others. The late Tom Imholte was very accomplished and was in charge of design and engineering for a large food company. His wealth of experience, though now somewhat dated is valuable. Anyone involved in food plant sanitation, design or pest control would find value here.

In assessing equipment and facilities, I use not only the information provided but the "way of thinking" that helps solve problems. No book can give you a checklist for every situation, but with the basics provided you can apply the concepts to new situations.

Another perspective on the war

This is a unique work as it doesn't focus on the complex political struggles of the time, or on the generals and battles. The focus here is on a social level. The life of the soldier and his day to day existence in the camp, the songs, poetry and literature that developed around the war, and interaction-usually violent-between peasant and soldier. Much of this book is quite sad as it reveals the harshness and cruelty of life in this time made more miserable by endless war. The book is filled with contemporary prints as well as museum photos of a artifacts from the period.

Military history buffs might also find the section on the Tyrolean peasant rebellion of interest. I have come across no other English language source that gives as much info on this sub-conflict.

translation problems and lack of chronological organization

Printed in Communist East Germany, this book has the required "bourgeois" terminology and lacks chronological organization. The German is translated into English awkwardly with the cumbersome Bismarckian style. But particularly frustrating is the failure to define which groups are Protestant and which Catholic. The composition of the "Estates" is unclear.

JAMES S. MILLER is an associate professor of American Studies and American Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he teaches a range of courses on twentieth-century popular and literary culture. Acting Out Culture Book Review

Social norms are a big part of our culture. I had never looked at so many social norms until I read Acting Out Culture by James S. Miller. Miller uses many different essays to present the topic of the social norm. The purpose of this book is to give you different perspectives on the topics presented.
This is a composition book, but this book is not like your normal English composition book. This is a very current way of looking at social norms. The reader can relate to the essays because Miller uses very current issues. James S. Miller is a professor at University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. Miller is trying to get the reader to see that the American culture is always trying to make you believe something because that is how they think things should be. These essays give the reader a different perspective on what the American culture is saying to you.
The book breaks down the social norms into chapters. The chapters are how we believe, how we watch, how we eat, how we work, how we fight, how we learn, and how we talk. Each chapter is composed of essays that are related to social norms of the topic. These chapters are arranged this way so there can be arguments between essays. Everyone should be able to relate to at least one of the stories. They make the reader really think about what America is trying to say about a certain topic. This is a very good book for a college level English class. The reason for this is that it brings up lots of discussions that allow students to really get involved in the reading. This book could also be read outside a class setting for fun. Because this book makes you think about things in a different way, it could be something that you can really enjoy.
Miller did a good job of making sure that the topics were well supported. He made sure that there were a few essays for each topic and that would allow the reader to be able to side with one or maybe all of the essays in the chapter. Miller's goal was to get you to think about social norms in a different way, and he does. My favorite essay was The Baby Genius Edutainment Complex: The New Smart Baby Products. The essay was about how parents now use DVDs, like Baby Einstein, to start teaching their children at a young age. The argument in this story was if these DVDs really make your children smarter. The author stayed on topic and the arguments in this essay were strong and well researched. After reading chapters of this book I have thought about some of the things that we do in life that are supposed to be the norm for us, and it shows you how society views people who don't fit into the norm.
The only bad thing about the book was that, some of the essays were too long. The writers make their point and then they go on for a while after that and the stories stopped being interesting. The essays don't really stay on topic of the social norm for the entire time. One example of an essay that does this is Big Organic. The question for this essay that is supposed to get the readers attention is, "Is organic really natural?" This question is a good one because organic is starting to become a big thing in our culture. You hear so many things about organic food now that you have to wonder if all the things that they say are true. This essay doesn't really answer all of the questions that you may have. It talks a lot about the grocery store, Whole Foods, then trails off.
I have dealt with social norms for my whole life. This book did a very good job of putting social norms into a different perspective. I really enjoyed the book because of how it made me think about how everyone lives by a set of rules because that is what someone says is normal. The book is very well organized and he fulfills his goals that he sets in the beginning of the book. He said that he wanted to make people think about how we view American culture, and he did this in his well organized composition of essays.
I would recommend this book to composition instructor. This was a very interesting book that I read in my English class. It brought up many discussions about what we thought about social norms in American cultures. This book allows you to agree or disagree with the author who picks the essays and the writers of the essays. Overall I really enjoyed this book.

Acting out culture

Around us all is the media. The media is no longer just books, television, and radio. It is everything about us. It has influenced the way we listen, the way we talk, and even the way we eat. In Acting out Culture, James Miller brings together more than forty articles to give his point of view on popular culture. The authors in this collection of writing speak of many different aspects of culture but what ties all these articles together is the influence of the media.
A common theme in these articles is Miller's ability to see the effect of pop culture on life's most mundane activities. He takes several articles and groups them into categories such as "how we watch" or "how we work." If one reads these articles alone the connection to the title can be unclear. But, when read together you are able to connect the articles in a very unique way. In the section "how we fight" the authors talk about fighting in different contexts. In one context he was speaking of combat while the other was speaking of arguments. He was able to see the connection in these articles. The main idea was that technology is making it possible to make fighting less personal. Miller was able to make this connection along with many other throughout the book.
It is refreshing to come across a book that questions social norms. So much of the literature used in classes is very safe. They do not question culture or even suggest that there is any grey area, rather they suggest everything is black and white.
Many text books that we give our students, especially in literature, do not allow our students to think abstractly. Yes we ask questions at the end of chapters to encourage the student to think, but these questions are just pointing them in a direction of thinking. Acting out Culture gives the student the opportunity of free thinking. Miller simply gives you the information, in the form of articles, and he lets the reader draw his own conclusion.
I think Miller did a good job in piecing these pieces of literature together. Although there is no such thing as a perfect text book, nor am I claiming Miller's piece perfect, but it is difficult to point out a flaw. The order of some of the writings may be confusing to the reader and some of the articles may be lengthy, but these are hardly flaws
If a teacher was looking to discuss social normality's or pop culture and its effect on culture, then Acting out Culture should be at the top of their lists. It is a great collections of writings that would be a great learning tool in any classroom.

Great potential..

Took it Mex last week and found only 1 out of the 3 caves I looked for. I did not find 27 steps (I think roads are no longer there) and Chicken Water - both are near Akumal. GPS coordinates appear wrong too (maybe my GPS was set wrong) - tried to verify coordinate on known cave and they were still way off.

Book has amazing potential but Mr. Gerrard need to drive each cave and ensure the directions are correct; so much has changed in the Rivera audit keeps . I've dove many of the usual caves so once I leave the beaten path the directions need to be somewhat accurate for the book to be valuable.

THE definitive guide to Riviera Maya!

I have Steve's previous book and have used it to entice people to join me on trips to Tulum area. I was actually very surprised when the new addition arrived. I figured it would just be an updated version maybe some newer pictures.

This version is jam packed with information that must have taken years to assemble and put into a systematic encyclopedia of the cenotes, caves and history surrounding Rivera Maya. Even though I have been visiting the area for nearly 10 years I found lots of new places to dive and good intelligence on how to do. Information such as where to pick up the key or who is the acual land owner can be hard to come by for visitors. Stee has pulled back the curtain on local only knowledge and generously shared with us all.
I have first hand knowledge of several places mentioned in the book, some only very recently opened to the public and all the information is spot on from my experiences.
Once upon a time this knowledge would only come from hard work establishing relationships and possibly multiple rounds of tequila with the right people.
Anyone from backpackers looking to snorkel in a pristine Cenote to hardcore visiting cave divers will benefit from bringing the guide along with them in their gear bag.
Thanks for the obvious labor of love! You have created a follow up edition that manages to surpass the excellence of the original. A rare accomplishment.

An amazing Book for anyone who is a cave diver or anyone interested in cave diving

It's been a few years since I have dove the Cenotes. The last few years have been mostly in the caves in Central Florida. I received Steve's book this morning and spent several hours bouncing around in it reading the descriptions of many of the places I have seen and I look forward to reading more over the next few days of places I want to see in the Fall of 2016. Steve's descriptions are concise and yet give the true cave diver the ability to see what he has seen. Steve also goes into details about the landowners and flow of many of the systems so that we can better understand the systems and the history behind them. Great book for anyone who is a cave diver and a neat book for the average recreational diver who may be interested in taking the next step.

Gives well researched answers to tough questions

I've been a born again believer, and student of the Bible for over 20 years. Although I have yet to read the entire book, from the 30% or so that I have read, the book seems to be well researched, and well referenced. I like the style that it is written in. The table of contents lists all the questions in the book, thus making the answers very easy to find. While some books tend to give a hundred different viewpoints, this one gives different views, but also gives definitive answers. The conversational style of the book also makes it much easier to read than something like Matthew Henry's commentary.

I don't agree with all of the answers that I came across in this book, but because on this side of heaven we only see in part, you will be hard pressed to find two Christians who agree on everything. At least the author has the guts to let it be known where he stands, and why from scripture as well as other writers and commentaries he holds a particular point of view. The book seems to be written from a conservative Christian point of view (which I like), and kind of reminds me of how the gotquestions.org website presents its answers.

I don't know the author from Adam, but I think I can safely say that the views expressed in this book are in line with mainstream orthodox Christianity. If you have nagging questions or want to solidify your beliefs about certain things in The Bible, check the table of contents to see if your question is addressed in the book. If it is, I think you'll be quite satisfied with the answers that are given.

A worthy translation of a good book

Maria K has taken up the task of translating lesser-known, but nevertheless good books into English. This is a commendable project, for we get to enjoy books that would lie below the radar otherwise.

This little gem is a story in the classic Russian vein. Rich in narrative, with colorful language full of visual and even scent cues, we are taken on a journey to the edge of darkness. Tsvet is a simple person, with a good heart and a sense for his place in society, who is offered the world on a plate. His moral integrity enables him to stay on the safe side even if he takes a glimpse of what could be, but aware of the price of what he sees, he does the right thing.

If you would like an entry point into the Russian masters of storytelling, this book is it. You will be amazed by the breadth of the narrative, whicn Maria K has rendered into flowing and eloquent English prose. As a story this is also a part of the grand corpus of devil tales, and as such, a good one indeed.

As an author of speculative fiction myself, I will read this again later and try to learn Kuprin's knack for weaving a rich tale without once boring the reader.

I could not believe how thorough this e-Book was! The team at FEI have outdone themselves, once again proving that they are the authority in online business brokerage.

I've been running online businesses for years and have read hundreds of different books, courses, and e-books, yet I still learned some new things from this guide.
