Patient., by Bettina Judd

Poetry. African American Studies. Women's Studies. "Bettina Judd's phenomenal debut poetry collection, PATIENT., is about recovery in many senses: recovery of the subjectivity of several historical figures, through the recovery, reconstitution, and telling of their stories--among them Anarcha Westcott, Betsey Harris, Lucy Zimmerman, Joice Heth, Saartjie Baartman, and Henrietta Lacks, who were infamously 'patients' or subjects of inspection and 'plunder' by, among others, J. Marion Sims, the controversial gynecologist, and P.T. Barnum, showman and circus founder. Sims (and the speculum) and Barnum are the featured antagonists in many of these flawlessly empathetic poems, but an unnamed speaker who adds a contemporary voice to the lyric chorus implicates those in charge of her care during a present-day hospital stay at Johns Hopkins--suggesting the linkage of modern medical treatment to the traumas vulnerable Black women, enslaved and not, suffered at the hands of unethical scientists and physicians in earlier eras.

In the collection's opening poem, the speaker reckons, '...verdicts come in a bloodline' and she determines 'to recover' from 'an ordeal with medicine' by 'learn[ing] why ghosts come to me.' She ends her testimony by asking, 'Why am I patient?' (Read that line in however many nuanced ways you want.) In this profoundly layered witnessing, the subject might be 'in the dark ghetto of my body,' or 'an idea of metaphors that live where bodies cannot.' Yet even as Judd vividly evokes the precise brutalities visited upon the Black female body and psyche--letting us see and hear women who 'quieted / broke into many pieces'--these poems also speak of 'shedding something,' 'another kind of sloughing.' Ultimately, PATIENT. enacts a healing and move toward wholeness, recovery of, as one speaker puts it, 'spirit [that] flees the body and / its treacherous / tearing.'"--Sharan Strange

Review
"This...is the equation that runs throughout Patient. The weight of history is a punitive force." - Southern Humanities Review

"Patient is not just the sad past.  Judd's ire is not simply historical, how would that be possible.  These poems hum and pulse like the air around a transformer during a heat wave.
These haunting poems are brave and bloody and bound to guilty truths that Judd artfully turn to balm. Patientis a book you can love, admire, extol." - Michael Dennis

From the Back Cover
In Patient. Bettina Judd beautifully (and horrifically) draws on historical evidence of nineteenth-century medical experimentation on black women, scholarly explorations of the body and the archive, and personal medical history.  The result is haunting in its insistence on laying bare these stories as they not only articulate experiences of the past but also resonate deeply with black women's experiences with the U.S. medical complex in the present.  Patient. is a brilliant meditation on race, gender, and science and a thrilling anthem to black women's self-knowledge.                                                                  --Elsa Barkley Brown, Associate Professor of History and Women's Studies, University of Maryland, College Park

J. Marion Sims, the legendary, now controversial, 19th century gynecologist looms large in Bettina Judd's recent collection Patient. Sophisticated, complex, haunting, Patient. beckons readers to remember, to feel, to think deeply, to discover, to probe.  Slavery's stench, the bodies of Black women, death, scientific racism, memory--these themes link the poems in extraordinary ways.  Judd is a masterful new poet. Patient. is unforgettable!!--Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Founding Director and Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women's Studies, Spelman College

Joice Heth. Lucy Zimmerman. Betsey Harris. Anarcha Wescott. Bettina Judd ensures you will remember the names of four women assaulted by science, violated by curiosity--survivors of physical invasion and torturous experiments. She presents their dignity, heretofore denied, as imagined in their own voices in conversation and parallel with a modern speaker, similarly (coldly) ensnared by a medical machine powered by detachment at best, cruelty at worst. Judd re-centers the narrative, however, to where it belongs--on the person(s) confronted, examined, in pain--not on the problem to be studied or solved. In visceral language that indicts, worships, haunts, and empowers, Patient. illuminates "a dynasty, a bloodline, a body" imbued with the full human spectrum of emotion and brilliance.--Khadijah Queen, author of Conduit and Black Peculiar

Bettina Judd's stunning poetry invites us to imagine the experiences of enslaved women subjected to gynecological experiments--the blood, pain, loss, shame, and survival.  Linking past and present, Patient. brilliantly condemns the inhumanity of professionals who infringe black women's bodies and celebrates the humanity of those who resist them.  It will disturb and move your spirit.--Dorothy Roberts, Author, Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty

Theme - recovery, the many aspects
By Grady Harp
California poet, writer and performance and visual artist Bettina Judd also is a researcher and teacher in Women's, Gender, and African American studies. Her powers of communication come from a rich intellect as well as a sensitivity to issues other ignore. This book of poems, her first solo anthology, is powerful as well as exquisitely written. Her subject - Recovery - be that in the memory of some famous `patients' or form assaults on the human form in other ways.

BORN STRANGE

The child in the caul
carries her eyes over
to the dead woman who pushed
her back into the womb

says, 'I'll remember you
when I'm big'

dead woman laughs
not surprised that
she's been seen,

`sho you

FILL A WOMAN WITH MEANING

Look

Children

Tell her
how to
rest her chin
wipe tears

when to
become woman
make love
never forget.

Explain to her
her sadness
fibroids,
miscarriage
blood sugar,
Wellbutrin.

Bend a spoon
find the torn,
the growing,
find what separates
apes from men.

Whatever you do,
do not pull curtains

Do not shatter the

Do not let her know

To appreciate this collection of emotion and creativity the entire book demands to be read and then re-read. This is powerful poetry by a very important artist. Grady Harp, March 15

It rocks, even for someone new to the series!
By Jen (Red Hot Books)
I am late to the Immortal Guardians party. I picked up an anthology a couple of weeks back featuring a short story from this world and liked it enough to try and jump in. Boy, am I glad I did. I really enjoyed this. It's the sixth book in the series, and there is clearly some stuff I missed, but none of it detracted from the story at hand, or the romance.

For the past year, Heather has been having the same dream about a vampire attack --and the super-sexy vamp who helps fight them off. Imagine her surprise when her dream becomes reality and suddenly the hot guy from her dream is a flesh and bone charmer standing in front of her. Heather never thought vampires were real, but she carries a special gift of her own, telepathy. Between her own supernatural ability and all those dreams, she takes the news better than most.

If you're not familiar with these books, they features a few different kinds of characters. Regular humans, which are self-explanatory; then gifted humans, like Heather. There are vampires, which are regular humans turned by the vampire virus, and Immortal, which are gifted ones turned by the vampire virus. (There are Others, too, but let's put that aside for now.) Basically, human DNA can't handle the virus very well and all vampires eventually go crazy, while Immortals stay sane and protect the world from the crazy vamps. Ethan is an Immortal and the man-candy in Heather's dream.

The two fall for each other pretty quickly, though it helped that Heather felt like she knew him from her dreams. Her telepathy and family ties to the military make her am ideal candidate to help the Immortal cause. It seems that Gershom, a powerful (Other) bad-guy, is amassing a vampire army, hoping to manipulate the human military into starting Armageddon. Heather can help stop his plan, but she'll need all of the Immortal Guardians to stop him.

Writing that out makes me realize that it's kind of complicated, but it's totally in a good way. For people who are already fans of the series, I'm sure it makes total sense, but even for a newbie like me, I promise, you'll catch on pretty fast. The arc moves along quickly, but no sot fast that you can't keep pace. It's just right to keep the pages turning.

Ethan and Heather are both likeable characters and they are good together. The sexual tension and physical aspects are hot, but their emotional connection is good too. There is a healthy mutual respect between them and I loved how much they both wanted to protect each other, without ever taking away the other's agency. What I loved even more is this phenomenal cast of characters that make up the Guardians and their team. These characters are so well drawn. They're unique and I feel drawn to so many of them, I can't wait to go back and read the five books that came before this one.

I almost never jump into a series on book 6, but I am so glad that I did. I hope I enjoy the backlist as much as I did this installment. I have a feeling I will!

Excellent addition to series!
By A Voracious Reader
*Book source ~ NetGalley

Heather Lane is a telepath, but how does she keep her telepathy a secret and still help people in need? By passing herself off as a FACS specialist to the government agencies who hire her. In other words, they think she can read micro facial expressions to tell if someone is telling the truth or lying. While she’s always known she’s a telepath, she’s never been a precog until recently. The same dream over and over, every night for a year, has haunted her. Seven vampires and someone else, a handsome, sexy, skilled man who is similar to the vampires and yet not, fight in her dream. When her dream finally comes true, she freaks out a bit, but accepts that there are things out there that aren’t fiction and now she’s smack in the middle of a war she never could have dreamed of. Can Ethan and the Immortal Guardians keep her safe from the enemy and prevent World War III and the Armageddon from becoming reality?

There are only a few series out there where I will wring my hands and dance anxiously in place until I can get my greedy little mitts on the next book. This is one of them. I knew when I picked this up I would not be able to stop until I had read it in one sitting. Oh, how I’ve missed the Immortal Guardians! Full of awesome characters, snappy dialogue, exciting action, steamy sex, sneaky shudder-worthy villains and delightful humor, I can never get enough of their world. Bonus that it’s set in North Carolina where I live. This is Ethan’s book and while he’s a fairly new character to the world I had no problem falling for him. Heather is a kickass woman who’s just right for him. And it looks like Chris is finally going to get his woman! Yay! I really, really want Aidan to find his mate. Poor guy! I look forward to Seth finding someone, but I don’t think he’s quite ready for that yet. Hopefully soon. And the surprise at the end? Woah. I have nothing further to say. If you haven’t read this series yet then wtf are you waiting for?! I drool in every review of these books, so you have no excuse. Get crackin’!

Predictablity Strikes
By Nancy
This is the sixth book in the series and I feel the books are getting redundant and predictable. Yes there is a sweet romance where an Immortal meets a gifted woman and they are immediately attracted to each other and she is ultimately transformed. Then you have the usual crazy vampires trying to kill everyone. I was hoping there would be a difference this time as Heather says she's an old fashioned kind of woman-meaning she wasn't going to have sex after just meeting Ethan and Ethan making an attempt to actually court her first before stripping her bare and ravishing her, but not really. OK they didn't have sex after meeting for the first time, but rather the third time they meet when she wakes up with Ethan in bed with her. Heather is a gifted human who has the ability to read minds, but has been having a recurring dream of a vampire attack involving Ethan and so they meet where she dreamed this takes place. There is some drama with Gershom who is trying his best to start Armageddon with yet another vampire army and how Heather fits into his devious plans. It was interesting to read about continuing characters from past books such as Marcus and Ami's child Adira and Cliff the vampire who has been working with the Immortal Guardians. I also was interested in Aidan on how he is doing hunting for a gifted woman to call his own and ease the loneliness of immortality. I hope he finds the one in the next book, but I also hope it isn't as predictable as Ethan and Heather's romance. How about some courting? It just isn't interesting if it's a sure thing when two people meet and then go straight to sex with their declaration of finding their soul mate. How about something fresh and original and not just plugging in different names into the same old plot? I can only hope in the next book.

From Library Journal
Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was a brilliant and original educator. Her work with children stressed the importance of autonomy as an educational goal. Renewed interest in her philosophy and teaching methods and the clear format of this book make it a good choice for public libraries. There is detailed information on her philosophy and an in-depth explanation of her teaching methods. Coverage of practical, sensorial, cultural, mathematic, and language activities includes a statement of the activity's purpose, materials needed (and suggestions on how to make them at home), and exercises. A good reference tool for everyone wanting to know more about or intending to try the Montessori method whether they are parents, teachers, or day-care personnel. Annette V. Great for really understanding Montessori Method, but a bit intimidating
By MYOB
Of the four books I have about using the Montessori Method at home with this age group, this is by far the best in some ways. It gives the clearest understanding of the sequence of activities, dividing them into groups or "periods"--and of the flexibility of the sequence. It has the clearest explanations of the presentation of each set of materials, and of the different exercises that can be done (in order) with each, as well as giving a good idea of which exercises lead directly or indirectly to which others. It has helpful tips for making some of the materials yourself at home (and of course instructions for making many more can be found on the internet).

And it has the best explanation of how to follow the Montessori method at home. Here are a few quotes that really opened my eyes:
"Imagine that the child has recently been given a number of very high quality presentations, the cleaned and polished materials are neatly stored in their designted places in the carefully ordered Montessori environment, you are sitting expectantly in the corner waiting to observe some of that remarkable Montessori self-teaching, and what is the child doing? Playing with the cat. Sound frustrating? Well, it shouldn't! We must be very careful not to get in the frame of mind that there is anything wrong with the child's playing with the cat, nor indeed with any typically childlike behavior. The point cannot be emphasized too strongly that the Montessori environment is only there to help the child. Forcing it on the child, making evident our expectations of the wonders that Montessori's method can work...will only cause harm and distress."

"A presentation to a young child should never consist, in whole or in part, of verbal instructions. The essence of a good presentation is that you don't explain the activity to the child--you show it."

"You must not draw attention to error...When an error occurs, you must decide whether it happened because the child was momentarily distracted or careless (in which case you simply ignore the error and continue as though it didn't happen), or if the error was fundamental to the concepts being explored (such as confusion about terminology or organization). In the latter case, you should gracefully and without any expression of disappointment bring the activity to a close. Later, at another unrelated time, you can give a special presentation that clears up the particular confusion in the child's mind. This may mean going back one or two activities to re-establish the necessary fundamental principles."

The downside is that the book's emphasis on perfection can be quite intimidating. The directions for Pouring Beans between Two Jugs comprise 26 steps. The page on how to present activities states, "Each presentation you give must be absolutely perfect..." While this may be the case in Montessori schools, homeschooling parents may find it intimidating and unrealistic to the point of immobilization.

I do recommend buying this book. If it's too perfectionistic and intimidating, then also buy Teach Me to Do It Myself: Montessori Activities for You and Your Child, which has many of the same activities with more accessible instructions, though without giving nearly as thorough an understanding of the underlying principles.

Great book! Recommended for training on presentations.
By Eduardo Villa Lopez
Shows you how to present material to kids its great for training. As material presentation is the key part to any Montessori activity to estimulate independence and attention. It gives you a step by step on how you have to present the most common Montessori materials.

excellent book - perfect for homeschoolers or school teachers
By lesleylovesteaching
This book is wonderful if you've already had an introduction to Montessori principles and ideas about learning, and would like directions for making some of these materials to use with your own children or in a classroom setting. I have incorporated several Montessori materials into my public school teaching, but since I was not in a position to quit teaching and start over, I found this book invaluable for laying out the steps on how to introduce the materials to children and teach them to work with them. Even when I use materials that I've purchased for my classsroom (the puzzle maps, for example), I have found that following the procedures for introducing the work in this book has made all the difference in how the children use them and how successful and self motivated they are in working with them. This book is an absolute bargain, and is a great introduction to using the Montessori materials and making them yourself. I would recommend it highly to anyone who is interested in homeschooling, or supplementing their classroom instruction with the always reliable Montessori materials.

this a better told story than Sienna and the Girl in the ...
By crpgnut
To me, this a better told story than Sienna and the Girl in the Box Series, at least for the four I've read in this series compared to the three in that one. The Sanctuary Series reads like a massively multiplayer online game, which focuses primarily on one guild. To anyone who has played an MMO, the story will be familiar. I'm not sure if any author has tried this format and it was refreshing. You have a Good guild, an Evil Guild and a bunch of smaller guilds that interweave through the tales. There is a kinda lame romance tale thrown in too, though the author is horrible at it. The protagonist Superman (Cyrus) has multiple relationships and he sucks at all of them. The first one is the only one that even has a microbe's chance of being interesting. The battles are very will written when the author focuses on guild raids and very dull once he branches out to military campaigns. There is a lot of dead writing where the same things happen over and over. This will not be as noticeable if you read the books over several weeks. I read all seven books over a three day weekend. Yes, I'm lame.

Not as good as the first three but still interesting.
By Todd D.
Interesting addition to the series. I read the first three back to back and wanted more. The only thing I don't like is the "Now" and "5 years ago.." stuff. Even if you follow a long all the books, it takes forever to figure out what is going on "Now". This series reads like a D&D adventure, lots of action with other interesting things thrown in. I will say this book was the least satisfying. The author has dragged out the so called romance between the two main parties forever. Overall still a good read but it seems he is struggling to find a story line here that works, at least compared to the other books.

All in all still entertaining, now I need to get the remaining books and see what happens...
