About the Author

Gilbert Held is an award winning author, lecturer and educator. Gil graduated from Pennsylvania Military College, earning a BS in Electrical Engineering. In 1966 Gil earned a MSEE degree from the New York University School of Engineering and Science, and received an MSTM and MBA degrees from The American University in Washington, DC.

Gil was Chief of Data Communications for the US Office of Personnel Management for 20 years, until a reorganization and consolidation of data centers resulted in the closing of the Macon Data Center. Gil remained on staff in Macon and was tasked with developing OPM’s Web presence on the Internet and was responsible for designing, acquiring and constructing OPM’s presence on the Internet for which he received the Directors Award.

Between 1977 and the present Gil has authored over 100 technical books covering personal computing, data communications and business In addition, Gil authored over 500 technical articles and for 17 years has served as the Editor in Chief of the Wiley International Journal of Network Management. In recognition of his excellence in writing Gil twice was awarded the Interface Karp award. Gil has also received a variety of awards ranging from various charities to different publishers, such as Federal Week which considered him as one of the top 50 persons in Government and Academia.

In addition to authoring books, Gil has taught 14 different graduate level courses and was selected by the Vice President to represent the United States at the Popov Conference in Moscow and represented the United States at the Jerusalem Conference on Information Technology. Gil has appeared on the NBC Evening News and his technical book sales have exceeded a million copies.

Was this book even edited? I paid much more than the $19.XX this book is currently selling for and was quite disappointed.

There are a lot of good info-graphics and charts, however reading around the lack of editing has been difficult.
Is there a reason this wasn't edited? And if so, why does books by this author cost so much?

I bought this and a second title from this author as textbooks for a class and now refuse to purchase any other titles by this author, as I am leery that they may all be edited this way.

About the Author
Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern teaches early modern, modern and east European Jewish history and culture at Northwestern University. He is the author of The Anti-Imperial Choice: The Making and Unmaking of the Ukrainian Jew (2009). He has also published about forty scholarly essays in journals such as East European Jewish Affairs, Jewish Social History, the Journal of Jewish History, Jewish Quarterly Review, AJS Review, POLIN, KRITIKA, Ab Imperio, and The Ukrainian Quarterly. He has been a Fellow at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University, a Rothschild Fellow in Jerusalem, a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Jerusalem, a Sensibar Visiting Professor at Spertus College in Chicago, a Visiting Scholar at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, and a recipient of multiple fellowships and grants, including the National Endowment for Humanities.

Mission and Vision: How to develop and communicate it.

A High Performance Team. We all want one or want to be a part of one. This book tells you how to develop one. It begins by developing a Mission Statement and Vision Statement, discusses how to communicate the goals and objectives, and then discusses techniques for achieving the necessary buy-in from the team.
I am a mid-level manager. I recently joined a young telecom company and set about interviewing and hiring staff and coalescing them into a Team. This book helped refresh the process of developing and communicating "management vision."
For a mature manager - a dozen years experience of managing 12 to 40 people - this is a good refresher. For a younger manager recently promoted or just getting started, this is a must.
This book should be coupled with Winning Management by Wolf J. Rinke.

A good read

I read this book from front to back and found it a very good read. No doubt I will get even more out of it when I look at it again. The authors propose a holistic approach to the creation, development and nuture of high performance teams through participatory management. I was so impressed by their argument I have commended the book to my colleagues as a model we might follow in our soon to be started business.

The fourth chronicle of Collins's Nate Heller (True Detective et seq.) is set in Chicago and Las Vegas in 1946. When a gangster shoots the private detective's client, gambler James Ragen, Heller assigns himself to investigate the case. During his sleuthing, Heller meets and falls in love with Ragen's niece, Peggy Hogan. She's one of the few fictional characters in the nostalgic story that features real people and parallels actual incidents of the times. The assault on Ragen is a minor part of the events when Heller and Peggy become involved with Ben ("Bugsy") Siegel, Virginia Hill and other notorious mob figures in Las Vegas. Generating suspense, the author describes Siegel's murder with the detective at the scene and details the shaky beginnings of the Flamingo Hotel, Siegel's unrealized dream of a luxury mecca for gamblers. There is such immediacy in narrator Heller's voice that the reader doesn't need the afterword about the novel's historic base.

I'd appreciate your help!

I'm a huge fan of Max Collins, specifically his Chicago PI Nate Heller. And I'm not even a huge detective novel guy!

I've followed the character Nate Heller from 1930s Chicago to 1960s Hollywood...and never doubted for a minute that Collins' characters WEREN'T involved in the crimes he has investigated. The work is THAT good! For me, it's all about the historical facts presented in a remarkably readable way.

In Neon Mirage, the reader follows the beginnings of early Las Vegas. The mobsters, the movie stars, the politicians are all there--fleshed out and totally believable. If you're at all interested in the FACTUAL history of the mob or how Bugsy Segal turned the desert into America's 'sin city', I highly recommend Neon Mirage. It--like ALL of Collins books-- is a great way to study history, while immersed in a great detective novel. When you finish, you realize, "Hey, I didn't know THAT!!"

Here's the reason for the title of this review:I've gone through all Collins' Nate Heller books, and I wish I COULD find another writer who can weave history with fiction as well as Collins does. Each time I read a Nate Heller book, I've not only been thoroughly entertained, I've come away with so much factual information! If any of you has a favorite author/series/character that does that for you--would you be kind enough to add a comment pointing me in the right direction?

Meanwhile, grab a copy of Neon Mirage. Or, better yet, start with "True Crime" or one of the earlier Nate Heller books...and work your way through the series. If you're a history buff, you'll like them for the information. If you're a mystery/detective buff, I think you'll be happy to meet Nate Heller!

Nate Heller meets Bugsy Siegal

This is another excellent entry in Max Allen Collins' Nate Heller series. The first half of the book is about a 1940s mobster hit in Chicago but the second half, and for my money, the best part of the novel is an interesting portrait of the mobster, Bugsy Siegal and the building of the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas in 1947.

Collins throws in a whodunit plot line, which is fun but still plays second fiddle to the portrait of Siegal. The mob history remains the central focus and, as usual, Nate Heller acts as more of a witness to history than a classic private eye. It all adds up to an enjoyable read that made me want to read more about the history of Las Vegas. And read more Nate Heller novels.

What happens in Vegas....

This is the story of how a sleepy little town in Nevada became a mecca for gamblers and other sinful types. It is also the story of Bugsy Siegal, a want to be movie star and mobster. The story is told as the investigation by Nate Heller of a murder back in Chicago. Needless to say, there is a lot of history told here but never a lecture. Collins is one of the greatest in this kind of storytelling. Read the notes at the end of the book to find how much is fact, a whole lot, and what is created for the tale. If you ever heard of a town called Las Vegas, read how it got its start. Truly fascinating, you won't put it down.

Concise and informative

This is an excellent book, which is well-written and understandable.

I am currently using it as a required text in a graduate course. It assumes that the reader has had previous courses in physiology and biochemistry, yet the authors give a concise definition of terms when warranted. I am going to keep this book rather than sell it because I think I will need it in the future.

Don’t Go There: A Solution to the Dyatlov Pass Mystery by Svetlana Oss

In Mikhailovskoe Cemetery, Yekaterinburg, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russian Federation is a memorial with the pictures and names of nine friends who perished at Dyatlov Pass in the Ural Mountains under strange circumstances. They are: Igor Dyatlov, team leader; Zinaida Kolmogorova, Lyudmila Dubinina, Alexander Kolevatov, Rustem Slobodin, Yuri (Georgiy) Krivonischenko, Yuri Doroshenko, Nicolai Thibeaux-Brignolles, and Semyon Zolotariov. A tenth member of the group, Yuri Yudin, had been forced to drop out due to chronic pain. He was the sole survivor.

It is always pointed out that Mount Otorten, their destination, translates in the native Mansi language to: “Don’t Go There.” This wasn’t because it was sacred ground, but because of lack of shelter, firewood, and game animals. The mount where the Dyatlov party made their last stand, Kholat Syakhl, means “Mountain of the Dead” or “Dead Mountain.” Once again this is in reference to the lack of what one might need to survive.
What could possibly make nine highly experienced and intelligent ski hikers cut their way out of their tent and fell into subzero temperatures without shoes and protective clothing? Why did they not light a bigger fire and all stay there? What caused’s terrible chest crushing wounds? Why was Thibeaux-Brignolles’ skull badly fractured? These three alone of the group died from something besides freezing to death.

Film and journals of the nine people give a fairly clear picture up until their last camp. There is where facts from the investigation come into play. The tent was cut from the inside. They proceeded in a fairly orderly fashion down the hill to the edge of the forest. They had built a fire that was insufficient to warm them. Three hikers had tried to make it back to the tent. Four were attempting to build a shelter in a nearby ravine. Two remained at the fire and a cedar tree which they climbed to get dead branches and perhaps to get bearings on the tent location. All froze to death except Thibeaux-Brignolles, Dubinia and Zolotarev, who died of their injuries and then froze.

Now trying to fit together the known facts to make a coherent story is a bit harder to do. There are about sixty theories that are floating about out there in an effort to explain what may have no good explanation. These include avalanche, moving snow packs, infrasound, attack by the native Mansi people, secret Government tests, aliens, and enemy attack. Some have been given a very good fit to the known evidence by various authors. But in the end they have only given a theory which is plausible enough to consider; they have not actually solved the mystery.
With some investigators into the Dyatlov Pass Incident, finding a plausible theory is enough to proclaim that they have solved the mystery. With Svetlana Oss’ story, the one you are considering now, this is not the case.

It isn’t because Oss cannot come up with a plausible theory that seems to cover all the facts. Just such an explanation is given. It is like most theories about the incident—well researched, carefully considered, and tries not to stray far enough away from fact to go into fantasy. (There are researchers of this unsolved mystery who do drift into nonsense, just as authors who research Jack the Ripper, The Bell Witch, and other unsolved mysteries.)

Oss takes great care to state that this is a solution that could be right. There is no claim made that this is the solution that explains it all. And that is to the credit of Svetlana Oss. Tell the facts, give a possible solution, and write your opinion clearly and with enough skill to hold your audience captive. Do not begin to stray into sheer fantasy unless you are writing fiction to begin with. That is the lesson author Svetlana Oss teaches with this narrative.

I salute this honest style of writing, and I believe Oss’ story is worth five out of five stars for that very reason!

Fascinating Stuff

I've read quite a bit about the Dyatlov Pass Incident, and find it absolutely fascinating--what the hell happened out there? The range of explanations for the nine deaths is absolutely fascinating--from avalanche to supernatural causes to UFOs to secret weapons to espionage to this author's favorite theory. But the circumstances are so bizarre, and the fact pattern so confounding, that most theories are contradicted by one or more of the strange facts.

This book has some very good aspects, such as the backstories for all the hikers, the recovered pictures, and more detailed coverage of the investigation than I've seen elsewhere. The author also does a good job of describing some of the various theories about what happened.

While the book is pretty good, it could have been better; for instance, I've seen better descriptions of where and in what condition the bodies were found that made it easier to grasp some of the oddities. I also agree with the other reviewer that the author's proposed solution for the case isn't really backed up by many facts, so while her theory is certainly plausible, you can't say that she has cracked the case. That said, the author's proposed solution is probably the simplest that I've heard yet, which is probably its greatest advantage.

Finally, something new!

Myself new to this most intriguing of mysteries, I have been busy hoovering up all the information I can find. It wasn't long before it was the same old stuff, over and over again. While I am not so convinced of the conclusion here, this book does provide important and helpful information either omitted in other sources or barely hinted at. The new information is very helpful at getting a better picture of the overall facts. However, a weakness of the book is that certain other facts of the case are not really brought forth or worked into the author's theory. The conclusion in this book, which is at odds with the (two different!) conclusions in two other, recent books on the topic, starkly highlights the inscrutability of the events of 2nd February, 1959.
