Dated text, weak on technical details

I bought this thinking since it was a 2008 edition it would be up-to-date on the latest materials and techniques. Not. This is essentially the year 2000 edition and does not address the composite bentonite-hdpe systems that are common today. I was also looking for some technical details on how a bentonite system should work but only a few overview-type comments were in the text.

Most of the drawings are clear and useful, but the black and white photos are small and sometimes hard to discern what is being depicted.

All in all, this book is a useful resource but not worth the high price being charged.

EDIT: On Page 2.58, author states: "Clay swells 10-15 percent of its dry volume under maximum wetting." This is incorrect, should be 10-15 TIMES, not percent. At 10-15 percent, bentonite would not work.

Excellent, practical reference

I used this reference to help create specifications and Scope of Work for commercial restoration projects and our warranties. Unlike the information typically provided by the material manufacturers the guidelines offered by the author are quite practical. His experience as a contractor is evident and it makes this book more useful than more academic texts. I also refer to it as I inform customers and employees on matters relevant to their interests and tasks. I recommend it to building owners, property managers, and particularly building restoration contractors like me.

High interest beginning reader...

As a retired English teacher I have to say I wasn't that impressed with this Level One reader BUT I fear my standards may be too high for a book like this. I felt the narrative was choppy and disjoined. Although that may have offended by "teacher" sensibilities I also must admit that for a beginning reader who is really into the Star Wars movies this criticism may not be a huge problem. The illustrations and content make this a high interest booklet for a beginning reader hence the child may well feel very comfortable with the storyline, such as it is. It is important to make a youngster comfortable with any initial reading experience so if this subject and book works...USE IT! Hook the child with content then, down the road, worry about literary merit!

A mind blowing book, and I would like to quote a review by Mr. Lee Trepanier's, Saginaw Valley State University, wich sums up witch insights this book has to offer: "J.B. Kennedy’s The Musical Structure of Plato’s Dialogues seeks to establish that Plato divided some, if not all, of his dialogues into twelve equal sections. These twelve sections, Kennedy argues, correlate with the Pythagorean twelve division multi-octave musical scale. From his analysis of the Symposium and Euthyphro, Kennedy argues that Plato used the underlying musical scale as an outline for his dialogues, with arguments appearing between notes and major turns in the argument located as notes. These findings support the interpretations of Plato’s followers who insisted that Plato used symbols to conceal his own views in the dialogues. They would also turn contemporary commentators of Plato away from literal interpretations and towards allegorical ones that Plato himself perhaps used."

A footnote to Plato - not the De Vinci code

It is often said that all Western Philosophy is but a footnote to Plato, and this book is an extraordinary footnote indeed! Professor Kennedy argues on mathematical and musical grounds that there is level of meaning encoded in the structure Plato's work and that moreover the underlying material is asserting that Pythagorean mathematics is the basis for understanding the functioning of the universe, not the gods. On the surface just the kind of idea beloved of novelists like Dan Brown, but Professor Kennedy is a scientist making a serious argument basing his theory on counting the lines in the original text and the appearance at precise musical intervals in the Greek scale of key ideas - positive where the interval is harmonious and negative where the interval is dissonant. Note: I have not read this book yet but I have read Professor Kennedy's earlier announcements of having discovered a hidden symbolic structure in Plato's dialogues and found it worthy of serious consideration. There is a lot of material on the web including interviews of Professor Kennedy for prospective readers to check. So like a lot of other people I have been waiting for this book. Interestingly Plato's ancient followers asserted that his work contained a hidden symbolic structure based on Pythagoras but in the absence of convincing evidence modern scholars have naturally discounted it. Kennedy's discovery emerged while teaching a course based on his specialized knowledge of the mathematics of ancient music and simultaneously teaching a course on Plato's philosophy. While many authors purposely obscure meaning for a variety of reasons Professor Kennedy argues powerfully that the threat of religious persecution motivated Plato. Plato had seen his own teacher Socrates executed for challenging the religion of his day and himself went into exile from Athens, arguably to avoid persecution. The dangerous belief that Kennedy thinks Plato was hiding was the Pythagorean idea that mathematics, not Zeus, was the key to understanding nature. As a scientist Kennedy quite rightly sees his discovery as bearing directly on the birth of modern science. If Kennedy's theory becomes generally accepted it will be fascinating to see the of reevaluation of Plato's work. I can't vouch for the readability of this book, but Professor Kennedy earlier book Space, Time, and Einstein which is an introduction to Physics for the layman is eminently readable. If Western Philosophy and the history of science interests you then this book merits you serious consideration.

I love this book.

Beginning with "The first six words I'll teach my pup are 'dig a hole' and 'fill it up.'" this book is absolutely hilarious. I had never heard of it before my son came along, but it is one of his favorites and mine. It is whimiscal, clever, and just plain fun: "have a care, don't paint the mayor." The cadence and flow of the words are masterful.
This nugget will surprise you. I hope you enjoy it.

He also intends to teach him "stand on Uncle Abner's thumb" and "paint the road from here to there"... Plans, however, are one thing; getting started is quite another.

Author Michael Firth is fantastic, as usual, with simple language made extraordinarily fun. P. D. Eastman's illustrations are perfect - they're fun and funny and complement the text. Kids will laugh and learn and that, to be honest, is who we're really interested in teaching!

my favorite for nearly 30 years

I loved this book as a child and now I love it for my own daughter.

I have vivid memories of a time when I could just newly read and barely count ...
staying up well past my bedtime, writing down all the words that were new to the dog (i.e. not counting "a" more than once) and trying to count them to see if the book really had 100 words (it did!). It was that engaging. I remember it took me hours, and then when my mom caught me still awake, I lied and told her I had just woken up.

The point in that is that as a small child, I found this book so intriguing that I was reading, writing, and counting for fun, well past my bedtime. As an adult, I love the wit. As a parent, I love that I get to share the childlike love for it all over again.

This is such a fun book with real learning potential too. Love it.

Fun Read

First off let me say this book was a lot fun to read. Not only did I enjoy the futuristic appeal of it but also the excitement of all the action. I adored the main character Alex because he was very unique and different from normal heroes. I may even have a small imaginary crush on him. I also liked the chemistry between all the characters. Plus the story was petty good. I liked all the twist and turns the book took.

What I wasn't happy with was it sort of read like another popular book we have all read or heard of HG. For me it was like the author wrote the book while watching the movie. That said it really was a good book and I did enjoy it and I am looking forward to the next installment and hope I get to read it. Overall a good book and a relatively quick read. Something you can enjoy on a weekend at home.

Couldn't put it down!

Carys Chase is a rare find: A Breed female AND a Daywalker, making her one of the most powerful of her kind. As much as her family loves and wants to protect her, their suffocating and sometimes controlling ways don’t sit well with the headstrong female. Carys lives and loves passionately and that extends to cage fighter Rune, a deadly male that has her family, particularly her father, up in arms.

Rune’s world consists of blood, violence and secrets. The lethal cage fighter doesn’t think he has any right to Carys’ love and loyalty, yet he basks in both even as he keeps his past from her. When that past comes back to drag him down again, Carys is caught in the cross fire and Rune must choose between trusting Carys or letting his past destroy him once and for all.

Bound to Darkness did something different with the main couple of the story. It dropped readers into Rune and Carys’ lives after they met and fell in love. When the book begins, Rune and Carys had been in a relationship for over seven weeks, so the focus and conflict of the romance was Rune’s unwillingness to mate with Carys through a blood bond for some mysterious reason. Since the plot already had some major twists and turns, this drastically cut down on the time that would have felt like a waste had the author set the book back when they first met. It really worked for me in the end, not having to sit through pages and pages of Rune and Carys circling around each other. They had a paranormal Romeo and Juliet vibe going on with Carys belonging to a prominent family who wanted her far away from the male they deemed unworthy and dangerous for her. I think that because he already loved Carys when the book began, Rune wasn’t as emotionally challenged as Breed males usually are. Carys brought out the best in him and saw what others refused to: He was loving, selfless and had a soft spot for the defenseless.

Rune’s mystery background was downplayed before but now in this book it is front and center, a ticking time bomb that, when it went off was not what I expected. The reason behind his name, his deadly skills in the fighting pits and his avoidance of any long term commitment to Carys was hinted at through the first half of the book and then just exploded in the second half, causing Bound to Darkness to pick up the pace from brisk to fast.

Even with the romance between Rune and Carys, the bigger plotline isn’t affected. The Breed warriors and their mates have their hands full with the new world the live in where humans know about their existence and tentative alliances are being formed while a growing organization threatens to break that alliance and a deadly new enemy is plotting an all out war against the Breed itself. The momentum is building for what could be an even bigger battle than the one that led to the outing of the immortal warriors. I love how each book offers small pieces of a larger puzzle along with connections between the Breed’s history and that of the Breedmates.

What has become abundantly clear in Bound to Darkness and the two previous books is that the woman in them are no longer just Breedmates, the group of women who are the only ones that can procreate with our vampire heroes. In the past these unique but non warrior women remained on the sidelines cheering on the big, strong men. Now, in what I like to think of as the second act of the Midnight Breed series, the women are taking control and jumping into the spotlight. There are now rare but completely capable Breed females, Daywalkers and in the case of the previous book’s heroine, something all together new. I personally love the increase in women getting in on the action and the fights and having their own secret gifts that are valuable to the ongoing war and the war that is slowly but surely creeping up on these characters.

This series is a long running one and while most series would have ended or run out of steam, the Midnight Breed series seems to have picked up steam. Lara Adrian has managed to keep the series fresh by adding new characters, the children of the original cast of characters which in my mind is brilliant because readers get new characters without having to say goodbye to the original ones that made the series so popular to begin with. It’s interesting to see the “Modern Immortals,” work with and sometimes clash with their ancient fathers. And let’s face it; even with these new kids on the block, I still want to see my all time favorite, Tegan.

Bound to Darkness has all the passion, danger and unique appeal of the original 10 books but also stands on its own as a turning point in the entire series with new pieces to a larger puzzle, new friends and old enemies. While some might find that overwhelming and complex, I don’t. I’ve read this series since the very first book came out and can say it’s not as complicated as other paranormal romances I’ve read. Though it could be read as a standalone, I would highly suggest that the series be read in order so that the most enjoyment can be had.

I’ve been reading this series for years it seems. It was one of the originally Vampire series I started. I loved it.

Now that it has moved on and it’s approximately 20 years later and we are now dealing with the originally casts kids it’s just weird to me.

I understand the premise behind each story is for everyone to hook up and find their blood bonded mate but I feel like they were just born. I was just reading their parent’s story and now the kids are here and getting mated.

In Bound to Darkness we get Carys and Rune’s story. Carys being Chase’s daughter from the first set of books. Yes I’m thinking of them in two sets. The parents and the kids.

There is the ongoing storyline of the Atlantean’s and the Opus Nostrum. I will be honest I was really having to think back to the last couple of books about what was going on. There was recap but not a lot. I would defiantly not recommend this book as a start to this series.

Overall it was ok. I’m not sure I’m going to continue with this series. It’s lost its magic for me at this point, which is regrettable but I also think I am just burnt out on Vampires.

I will still tell anyone that this is by far one of the most originally Vampire PNR out there and would recommend it anyone looking for this type of book. But for the time being I think I done....Sara

Review: Bound to Darkness

Bound to Darkness continues the story arc, which was first introduced in Edge of Dawn, of a world where vampires (Breeds) and humans exist side by side. As the thirteenth title in Ms. Adrian’s highly successful Midnight Breed series, Bound to Darkness is not the place for new-comers to begin. While the author does a good job bringing in enough world-building and background to keep readers up to speed, I feel that much of what makes this series so good would be lost if one started with this book.

This time around, the romance focuses on Carys Chase (daughter of Chase and Tavia) and Rune (cage fighter), both of whom were introduced back in Edge of Dawn. The pair has been a couple for just under 2 months, which puts the entire time line since Edge of Dawn at about the same. It’s hard to believe so little time has passed over the course of three books and two novellas. Since the pair has been together for a few titles, I felt the quickness of their romance and falling in love worked better than had they just met.

I enjoyed Bound to Darkness for several reasons, most of which stem from this book being a bit different from prior titles. When misunderstandings could have caused problems for the couple, the strong, smart characters utilized the seeds planted along the way to figure out the truth. I can’t tell you how refreshing this was. Other factors that made this a good book include: 1) the couple was together in the previous titles. They are already in love and the focus is more on shedding the past and growing into the person each was meant to be. 2) The “I’m not worthy” trope, which is one overused in the Midnight Breed series, isn’t a factor in this one - in fact Rune FIGHTS for Carys and to be with her. Even after things turn south, he never gives up the idea that eventually they will be mated. 3) Carys kicks major butt and Rune supports her fully. I LOVE how totally badass Carys is and that Rune doesn’t pout or whine about it.

Generally, the sexy times are hot and heavy, but never overdone. There is a good balance between the smex and action. And dialogue… finally we have a couple that talks about their secrets and fears well before the climatic scenes!

Outside of the romance, this book has a lot to offer fans. Readers learn more about the mafia-like group, Opus Nostrum, as well as the Breeds’ ancient enemy, the Atlanteans. While there isn’t a lot of progress on either front, I appreciate the strides made over the course of Bound to Darkness. I also felt that the story itself was more focused and complete than those of the past couple books (which served more as world-building books than achieving stellar plot development).

While I mostly enjoyed the book, I was a bit disappointed by the apparent relegation of Tavia to that more like a Breedmate when she’s a warrior Breed. And I question the minimized roll of Carys’ twin brother Aric, who was pretty much absent from the whole book. He always put up such opposition to Rune; he should have had a bigger roll.

Overall, I found Bound to Darkness highly enjoyable and my favorite of the newer titles. I love that the author didn’t go the usual direction most of the series titles take. The romance between Carys and Rune was well developed and more than “I love yous.” Additionally, the story outside the romance was exciting and well-balanced. Even after thirteen titles, the Midnight Breed series remains one of my auto-reads.

About the Author
LAURIE DAVID is devoted to stopping global warming. She founded the Stop Global Warming Virtual March and has produced several projects that aim to bring global warming to public attention, including the TBS Earth to America! comedy special, the HBO documentary Too Hot Not to Handle, and Al Gore's documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. She was voted Glamour's Woman of the Year for 2006. Laurie lives with her husband and their two daughters in Los Angeles, California.

Cambria is a former award-winning advertising copywriter. She has written articles for Boys Life, Parenting, and the Los Angeles Times magazine. Cambria speaks to children all over the country about reducing their carbon footprint. She sits on the Los Angeles Leadership Council of the Natural Resources Defense Council and lives with her husband and three children in Los Angeles.

inconveniate truth

This is a truely great chalenging and inspiring film. Al Gore and this film deserve all the awards and Nobel Prize they earned.

Incorrect Critical Charts

Readers should be aware that the the first editions of this book contain a chart (page 18 ) of the past 650,000 years that shows that CO2 emissions rose BEFORE global temperatures. In fact, the chart is reversed - CO2 emissions did rise, but only hundreds (in some cases thousands) of years AFTER temperature rises. For some reason the chart lines are backwards.

Scholastic is planning to issue a revised version with an updated chart, but there will be no revision to the text of the book, which references and explains the chart. I don't know that most kids will notice that the chart does not support the argument, but an important subject like this should be accurate in all details.

With such inaccuracies I do not recommend the book. Explain global warming to your children yourself - and be sure and use accurate information!

Hopeful and Empowering for Kids (and adults too!)

This book is fantastic! It discusses a potentially scary subject in an engaging and surprisingly optimistic way, informing kids while also giving them a feeling of hope and empowerment. The ideas in this book are presented in a clear and clever way. The authors even managed to bring a tone of lightheartedness to an undeniably heavy topic.

The importance of preserving our children's future is not political issue...it is a love issue. And whether you drive a Prius or a Hummer, there's no doubt that we all love our children. This book helps us open our eyes and our hearts to the many small (and not so small ways) we can each contribute to a cleaner, safer earth. And it allows our kids to be part of that healing.

There are so many things kids can do to help care for our world, and this book gives them the tools with which to do it. It also invites them into an age appropriate sense of responsibilty and ownership for the animals and nature that they adore. The book imparts practical, doable ways kids can contribute and lets them know that they (and their efforts) count!
